You have a tube for a waistband right?

The back waistband is folded down and sewn into a 'casing/tube'. The front waistband is not, it just has interfacing and is folded open according to directions.

alright I think I've got it, I really hate confusing directions, you should have seen me trying to figure out this vest pattern for a day and a half, drove my husband to tears of laughter.

It sounds like the waistband only has elastic in the back, I checked all my patterns and all I would do is run the elastic through the tube in the back, and stitch one end to secure.
Remember a seam ripper is your friend.

yeah a very useful friend indeed

this pattern has driven my hubby nuts. he helped me do just what you said and it is now almost finished other than hemming :)
