Doctor Who and Sherlock Holmes

Sep 02, 2012 20:55

So... the season premiere of Doctor Who? I won't say anything in case there are some people who haven't seen it yet, but I will say this: the ability of the writers (Steven Moffat, in this case) to successfully evoke just about every single human emotion in one hour-long ep (40 minutes, actually, once you subtract the commercial breaks) is amazing ( Read more... )

Darling, you are not the only one with a posthumous crush on Jeremy Brett-as-Sherlock. Not by a long shot. The Granada series is one of the biggest reasons I look at both the RDJ movies and the BBC modernized series and say, "You're not my Sherlock." I don't have a problem with any portrayal that exists of the man, but my Sherlock - the one in my head - is a composite of the esteemed Mr. Brett and another gentleman, a Sherlockian re-enactor who kind of leaves me without powers of speech. XD

Heh, glad to know I'm not the only one!

Oh, yes, the Granada series just seems so perfect--really, my thought process was "Why would anyone even bother with a remake?"

I don't have any problem with any portrayal, either--in fact, I do want to look into the new BBC series (seeing how I'm loving Doctor Who, I totally trust Steven Moffat), but Jeremy will always and forever be my Sherlock. ♥

Finally you are watching stuff I am familiar with. XD

I also watched and loved the Granada Holmes series. I think Jeremy Brett is fantastic.

I also really enjoy Doctor Who: Both Classic and New Who, it's a lot of fun. Not every episode works for me, but overall it's a great series. Although I personally enjoy it more now that Moffat is the head writer.

Oh & the BBC Sherlock is fantastic (Moffat is the co-creator). It's hard to compete with Brett but Cumberbatch is also great (plus he has the most awesome voice) and Martin Freeman is the absolute best Watson. He's the only one that really fits the book Watson for me that I have seen.

If anything their friendship is more pronounced in this version of Sherlock, so I highly recommend it (although Sherlock can also be more of a jerk as well but that makes it more interesting)

LOL. XD

Yes, he is! It's like he was born for the role...

Ah, I've only seen New Who, since that's all that the BBCA shows. If they did show Classic, I would definitely look into that, too.

Hmm, I thought I saw somewhere that Benedict said that he drew his portrayal of Sherlock from Jeremy's, so it's nice to know that there was that influence, as well.

If anything their friendship is more pronounced in this version of Sherlock, so I highly recommend it

*Want!*

If you like Jeremy Brett he also plays Freddy in My Fair Lady, He was a really lovely man who put his all into the role. I also think as far as being an adaption of Conan Doyle's works, the Granada series is perfect.

Moffat's Modern Sherlock is more like putting the Holmes canon into a modern setting and it really works. There are also a lot of nudges to the fans of the original books. That's what makes it fun.

But because the two series are different I don't think you need to have a preference, they both do their own thing in a way. But I definitely like the new BBC Sherlock best for Sherlock & Watson's relationship, mainly because like I said Watson is so very perfect, he;s not secondary to Sherlock but his own developed character.

The only place I know that has Classic Who is Netflix. :/

Ooh. Must rewatch that movie then.

Nice; now I really want to look into that...

Hmm. Yeah, I guess they can be seen as different enough...

...Which I no longer have. Bleah. Oh well, maybe they'll air some old eps on some special occasion...

I've sort of seen a bunch of random Sherlock Holmes movies/series and I don't even remember which ones they were. Never really got into them (crazy since I'm such a mystery nut) and leaned more towards Campion and Miss Marple, but I have been seeing adds for Elementary and think it could be fun. Even if it's not as much like the others because Lucy Liu is Watson. I'm not sure if I've seen Sherlock, though...

I know; I'm astounded it took me this long to get into it, too! I mean, it's no secret I'm a mystery nut, too...

Huh... Well, I was all intrigued about Elementary... until I found out about girl-Watson, and then lost interest. You know me--for me, it's all about male friendship and surrogate brotherhood. XD

The hug... gah! You should've seen me fangirling when I saw that...

Yes, yes, yes, a thousand time yes, he is Holmes. *squees*

he and Edward Hardwicke were apparently really good friends off-set, too
*Yes* there was an interview in the DVD special features where Jeremy flat-out said that Edward was his best friend. I *love* it when that happens--when they have RL best friends playing the roles of best friends--it's the same reason why I love and adore the Monkees so much!

**nodnod** I do want to see at least one ep of the new Sherlock to give it a try. I'm sure I'll like it, seeing as though I've loved all the other Moffat-penned stuff I've seen.

If you like Sherlock Holmes, or even just a good mystery (which I know you do about the second point), you should really look into the BBC series! So much squee involved.

Oh, definitely. Basil is a fine Sherlock, but I had/have a VERY hard time believing the Watson they picked for him. After all, he IS supposed to be a doctor, and while perhaps not as bright as Sherlock, certainly bright in his own way. Me and Mom have been watching the Granada series for several years whenever we can find them on TV. And if it's friendship cuteness you're after, the BBC series is a MUST! Really can't emphasize that enough.

Well, that settles it, then; I must find a way to see it!

Yeah, really. It's really terrible that they dumbed down Watson; now I'm certain that's why it took me so long to get into the fandom. I am so glad that I finally discovered the awesomeness that is Granada.
