International Women's Day is not only for mothers. It celebrates women in every walk of life. And women - especially in Russia, where March 8th is a huge national holiday, this year running 6th, 7th and 8th - are extemely pleased and proud with their holiday.

Of course, we could do that mealy-mouthed British thing, where you have "Bank Holidays" - which celebrate nothing whatsoever.

A country which cannot be bothered to celebrate events like Armistice Day, VE Day, VJ Day, Trafalgar Day etc has no business telling Russians what holidays to celebrate. Women would give you a punch on the nose for mocking their holiday - and quite right too!

Don't be so thin skinned, anyone who has lived in Russia will aver it is a strikingly chauvinistic place. Yes you are correct about Ingerlund, the politicization of holidays, no Armistice Day but more crap about our "Heroes" and "gallant allies". As I said in a spoof it will be a short time before we get Thanksgiving & 4th July!
