So. This is what it feels like to be a first year teacher suffering from the first year blues, huh? I'm feeling down and out. I'm feeling down right discouraged.

I give assignments...they disregard them.
I give punishwork...they refuse to do it.

holy shit, Rob. High school kids are tough, and I'm sure being so close to their age leads to authority problems.

Don't be discouraged! I know what it's like to have a principal who won't back you up and offers no support. Have you made friends with your fellow teachers? Maybe they can give you some insight.

I have so much respect for teachers because I know I wouldn't handle myself well in those situations you described. I wish there was more I could say about it except hang in there<3

OMG, I'm sorry to hear you're having such a difficult time with your class. What is wrong with them? Is there a reason they don't listen? Age, neighborhood? So many "kids" can be such assholes.

*hugs*

I'm really sorry. I wish I had words of encouragement or could relate, but that sounds frustrating and awful. I know how much you worked to be a teacher and how excited you were. Despite how rough it is, I hope you can still find good things.

Whoa...that's a really shitty beginning to your first year of teaching. It'll take them time to trust you. Maybe read some books written by inner city teachers and see how they deal with teaching difficult students?
