The weirdly sculpted shapes that make up the mighty thews of any of his barbarian heroes likewise depart wildly from anatomy as we know it.

Actually, I'd bet money that if I cross-referenced Conan's back with handy copies of Gray's and Hogarth, you could identify most of those ridges. And check out those hips. He was a master of observation of mass, something that seems to be unfortunately lost in the airy, too-slick followers like Vallejo.
