Point #1: comments on my LJ posts are working, but I still cannot comment to other journal entries. This is irritating, but somehow, life goes on. Insert your usual 'godDAMMIT, Livejournal' rant here.

Point #2: I have caught up on American Horror Story and have thoughts on it. Here are those thoughts.

Actual thinky thoughts on American Horror Story. Mentions of violence and rape, so skip if you don't want to read. )

If there's one thing I've learned through fandom (and real life), it's that men barely have to do anything at all to get people sympathizing for them and excusing their behavior.

But I appear to be replying to your post, so, maybe progress!? Yay!?

It's so true. People will excuse the worst behavior if a man has done it. Sigh. But at least this show doesn't excuse the men for the things that are totally their fault, so that's one good thing.

I can respond to comments too! But I have to do with my customized comment page, and I don't like that. :\

That is good! Usually canon and fandom tends to agree on that point. :\

Yeah, me too. I miss the old comment pages, sigh. Good job, LJ.

I think it's so clear that Tate is a complete psychopath. I mean yes, he is caring towards Violet (and there are moments where he genuinely seems to be normal - that line he gave a few episodes back about leaving her alone if she meant it... that he'd do it because her feelings meant more to him than his own? I WISH EVERY MALE CHARACTER WOULD SAY THAT) but it's grounded in this weird possessiveness, too. He cares about her, but he'll hurt everyone around her to keep her with him. But I think his dark side is most apparent when he is constantly lying about what he's done in the past. It's this methodical, calculated lying, too. He lies and lies and lies until he can't anymore, and then he'll get tearful and pose the question to her. WHY WOULD I DO THAT? Urg. I am so so glad that Violet basically called him on his shit and told him to fuck off. The last episode was a powerhouse for Violet & Vivien ( ... )

See, the lying is what convinced me that Tate had no redemption, no matter how much he loved Violet. Maybe he forgot shooting up his school, but everything else was a calculated lie or omission. He didn't tell her about killing any of the inhabitants or who Larry was or that he was responsible for the rape of her mom, and he actually tried to lie about it when Violet finally confronted him. He did those things knowing full well what he had done, and he knowingly lied about those things so that Violet would never find out what kind of person he is ( ... )

I just watched all of AHS the other day (before the last episode came out, which I'm going to watch now) and the thing about Tate for me is he IS sweet with violet but it's a selfish kind of love. I NEED YOU HERE REGARDLESS OF YOUR FEELINGS. Although he seems more subtle about it. He's missing that politeness that someone like say, Hannibal, has. Yes, I just said Hannibal was polite. But he was! Sort of. In a way. Sometimes.

Yes, yes, this is the thing exactly! Tate's love for Violet is very possessive, and while he cares about her feelings, he cares more about the fact that she never leave him because she makes him happy. I found it really off-putting that he used "I love you" as a way to talk her into situations that she didn't originally want to be in. She's a teenage girl who has never had a boyfriend before, and he pushed and manipulated her a lot, and put her in dangerous situations at times. Loving her and trying to take care of her are not enough when you use her like that.

Ahahaha! Hannibal was totally polite compared to Tate.

Also, the way he was able to so convincingly pretend he didn't know he was dead/didn't know who those children were that he killed, speaks of the sociopathy/psychopathy he's capable of. That in and of itself diminishes the sincerity of whatever he actually feels for violet to me. And normally I'm all for the bad guy who is dangerous and murderous and insane who just happens to have a soft spot. Because he doesn't do the soft spot convincingly enough, or in the right way. I still like him as a character but he's awful and untrustworthy. I don't think I'm making sense.

You are making total sense. That is one of the things that I don't like about Tate, that ultimately makes me not be on his side. He's a liar and a manipulator, and whatever sympathy I felt for him and how he grew up was pretty much dashed out by his rampage at the school and all the murdering he did after he was dead.

And he never showed any remorse for it, so I will never be on Tate's side, and I don't understand people who are. He is a terrible person with no wish for redemption! Just because he says he wants to be a different person doesn't mean he is one, especially when he's not doing anything to become a different person.

I think what I mean is that when I like a dangerous, insane, even murderous character and they have a soft spot in another person, I like it best if they are honest with that one person. Be what you want and who you are, no matter how crazy, but don't hide it and lie about it. Hannibal, or if you need a cheesier example, Damon Salvatore, are who they are but also love who they love. They may love you and you can trust them and see through their armor but they're still madmen and they know it and are honest about it. I think that's more attractive.

Also, Ben gets under my skin in a bad way. Such a selfish male.

This is a tangent and you probably don't even watch the Vampire Diaries but that's why I'm always so confused by the people who want Stefan with Elena so badly. Both brothers have horrible, violent pasts but Stefan has lied to her repeatedly about it and constantly keeps things from her "for her own good," whereas Damon is usually straight about everything and makes no excuses for who and what he is. That's the main reason he's the more interesting choice to me. I guess I just don't take well to the idea of someone lying or keeping things from me for what they deem to be my own good. It's just such an arrogant way to be. To me, it says that they think they're better than you in their core being to the point that they don't even think about it, it just colors how they act and what they say to you. It isn't respect. K, I'm done. :O
