Most trainers might have gone back to the Pokémon Center and regretfully sacrificed one of the spots on their team to an old HM slave they hadn't used in years.
But Gym Leaders were, by definition, not ordinary trainers.
"Hey, Surge!" he yelled as he stepped over the stupid bush, hitting it as he went over for good measure. Bending down to brush stray leaves off of his pants, he squinted up at Surge with a grin. "You might want to call Erika," he said, "Get the name of a good landscaper or something. Kind of pathetic to let challengers trim your hedges for you, don't you think?"
Eevee was conspicuously absent, but he still had six Poké Balls on his belt. Green straightened up, glanced down at the adorable Pok&ecaute;mon by Surge's leg, and laughed. "She's cute," he said, actually meaning it. But he could never just give compliments-"Suits you perfectly."

Probably not the best counter, but okay then.
"Big things come in 'cute' packages, kid," he commented, feeling Skitty press up against his leg with a mewl. It was a very cutesy-boo Pokemon, but screw it. If it was a part of his team, it had to have some level of potential. Volty was living proof of that.
And of course, with a jab thrown in his direction, he had to return the favor. "Could say the same for some rat. Tiny and wimpier than something more shocking- sounds like it'd suit you!"

Green laughed at Surge's snappy comeback; the promise of a good battle on the horizon had him in an unshakably good mood. "Oh! That reminds me," he said, digging in the small bag he had at his side. He pulled out the book he'd promised and held it out. "Hope it helps."

He wasn't exactly a fast reader, but when it came to Pokemon, he certainly didn't let himself go at a chug. Two weeks was only the worst amount of time Green would have to wait.
With that settled, though, he noticed Skitty getting a bit edgy at his feet, gnawing at his shoe a little. It looked like she was ready for some kind of activity, any kind. Good thing a battle was coming.

Green took a moment to survey the interior as the two of them walked to the battlefield. "You really don't change things much in here, huh?" he said. "Looks good, though." Once he was standing on his side of the arena, he grinned across at Lt. Surge. "Hope you're ready," he laughed, and sent out his Rattata. Once released, the Pokémon bounced with excitement, just as ready as Skitty was.

She wasted no time and made a mad dash for the battlefield. Once her paws hit the new ground, that tail began to wag to and fro, side-to-side, her very being obviously full of energy.
Surge wanted to see how this Rattata attacked before he began, though. His mind began to reel, ready to begin to strategize. "Go on, I'll let you go first! Show me what you've got!"
