a weekend in South Australia

This weekend, I took the train to South Australia (about 60km from Adelaide, at the top of the Barossa Valley wine growing region) to attend a weekend party and burn hosted by my friend David from Burning Seed. I went with limited expectations, and had a really nice time in a variety of surprising ways.

Sometimes it's good to step into a world you don't normally move in, and find out there are good people there too. ;-)

Agreed. I will definitely be hugging Dana when she returns from Adelaide. She's got a bit of strife at the moment as her father is having some health problems and her mother is being very difficult about the whole thing. She doesn't know whether to drop everything and run to California NOW or wait a few months as she had intended. It's tough to be on the other side of the world when things like that happen.

This curious ex-Adelaidian would love some names, as me Mum had a close friend living in Angaston for many many years, and even the sound of the names around there make me wistful...

I don't think I've ever taken the Melbourne-Adelaide rail trip by day - always by night. (Do they still change locos at Serviceton/Bordertown?) I've usually driven that trip which took about 8 hours.

Places I went included: Springton, Birdwood, Tanunda, Nuriootpa, and ... some others that I can't recall. Mostly Barossa Valley and environs. The little bit of Adelaide cityI saw seemed perfectly pleasant and a bit like Christchurch. But I agreed that I would tell people that Adelaide is a shithole full of bogans--it's apparently how they keep their rents down ;)

They no longer have to change locomotives at Bordertown.
