The beach. She hadn't been there since- well, since the last time they had been to Narnia. It had been fun, despite the sand in her hair for days afterwards and the fact that her eyes stung from salt. And so- Susan had been looking forward to this for a little bit. She'd even invited Caspian- although she wasn't sure that he'd come. Susan walked down the streets, barefoot- shoes had seemed like a hassle at the time, towards the beach. Wearing a simple white cotton sundress and loose hair- she felt more at home and comfortable than she'd possibly ever been in England, where everything was stuffy, scratchy and stiff ( ... )

Max followed Susan's movements as she walked along the beach, paused and then move to stand in front of her. Well, at least her first question hadn't been, "YOU HAVE WINGS?!", which was kind of a useless question when Max sported two, seven foot wings on her lanky, five-foot-eight form. The girl pulled her legs in and stood, dusting off the sand that had gathered.

"Yeah." She tucked a loose strand of blond hair behind her ear and scratched the base of her neck. "Look," Max paused, trying to force herself to apologize. Get past that stupid pride of hers and just say it. "It was stupid of me to tell you that you were being selfish. I wanted the same thing when I first got here, I still kinda do. I know I told you in the journals, but that is just writing. It takes no guts to admit you're wrong when you're just writing it to the person."

Another pause.

"So, I'm sorry for being such a jerk." Max shoved her hands into her pockets and waited for the other girl to say something.

Susan blinked once, twice. And then she remembered exactly what Max was going on about.

She wouldn't deny that it hurt, being told that she was selfish for wanting her siblings here. But she also couldn't deny that every word that Max had said was true. It was selfish- they were better off at home instead of here. And so this apology seemed a little bit strange to her- especially since there really wasn't anything to apologize for. "Oh! That's quite alright." Susan insisted, shaking her head vigorously. "You were right, of course. Everything you said was true. You don't have to apologize." a smile and then a slight laugh. Because right now, Max's awkwardness was reminding her very much of her brother Peter. His pride often made him awkward, but his chivalry often led him to apologize for ridiculous things ( ... )

Max smiled. She didn't hate Susan, and there was no reason she couldn't get along with her, even if max was blunt and rude more often than necessary. She glanced at the basket, "Well, I brought food if you want to stay out here."

Play nice, be sociable for once. This was something her mother would've done.

She sat down on a blanket and gestured for Susan to join her. "I think we should start over or something." She so rarely gave people second chances. It wouldn't surprise her if Susan just left after this. Maybe it was because she wanted to be nice to this newbie. After all, she'd been one once, and Rivelata was no walk in the park.

As blunt and rude as Max was, Susan was just as patient.

Growing up being the surrogate mother of sorts to her siblings, she had to be. Especially since Edmund hadn't exactly been the most...co-operative of children after Dad had left for the war. So she'd learned to deal with difficult people, for the most part and her patience was hard to wear thin, although she was only human.

"We should." Susan said with a nod, looking around the beach once before settling down beside Max on the blanket. "And the food looks lovely, thank you. I didn't think to bring anything like this." a smile was given, although she felt slightly awkward right now.

Hopefully- they might even become friends. And things would be less awkward and more comfortable. Susan squinted as she stared towards the brightly shining sun- not directly at it because as everyone knows, that is a very foolish thing to do, but instead up at the azure skies it lit up. The perfect day for a trip to the beach.

"Do you plan on swimming, then?"

Max gave a shrug. "Takes forever to dry off my wings here." She didn't know why, and taking showers daily hadn't made them dry off quicker. "Plus I'm not big on skinny dipping, and I really need these clothes later." Conveniently, Max also hadn't brought sunscreen, and wasn't big on burning herself.

She gave a shrug. She wasn't going to admit she couldn't remember swimming for the fun of it, not even here. Oh well. Swimming would be a lot easier when you had air sacs and air bubbles in your bones. Well, she wasn't masquerading as a human here...

Oh well. It was nice to be outside, away from the house, even if it was sticky here from the humidity. "You?"
