I've read the first 3 or 4 books and then stopped and waited 3 years for the next one to come out and then another half year or so until the paperback came out. I decided to wait until ALL the books are out then start reading it from the beginning again.

I've only watched the first ep of the TV show, didn't really have time for more yet.

Something that I found similar and loved was the Sword, Memory & Thorn series by Tad Williams. Good thing, it's finished. It also has some character POVs that I did not care for, but the pay off was absolutely amazing. Like many seemingly unfitting puzzle pieces falling into place. Loved that one.

Oh dear, luckily the 5th one was nearly out by the time I started reading them so I had less waiting to do than you.

That Tad Williams series seems to have a whole range of reviews on amazon and no 'look inside' option so I'll have to go out find it in a bookshop and see what I think.

One of my favourite fantasy trilogies is The Tamir Triad by Lynn Flewelling but I have never met another person who has read it! Have you by any chance read it?

Nope, but I just ordered the first volume as I just finished my last Robin Hobb book and am looking for new stuff. If you haven't tried Robin Hobb, give her a try. I've read the Farseer Trilogy, the Fool Trilogy (follow-up to Farseer), the Lifeship series and now the Dragon Keeper chronicles and loved them all. Not perfect, but very good and very enjoyable.

Tad Williams is a strange one, I loved his earlier books (if you like cats then read "Tailchaser's Song", it's among my Top 3 of all time), but since Otherworld... he gets wordier and wordier with each book... I haven't tried anything since the one-shot with the fairy world gone bad.

You ordered it just like that?! I assume you read the blurb about it first, you can't blame me if it's not to your tastes :)

I'm trying to stick with Japanese stuff at the moment, I feel a bit guilty if I think about buying English books.
