shimau “Bring the suction here,”said the doctor to one of the nurses.
The nurse ran away, looking for the thing that Ohno even couldn’t imagine.
“Come on, baby,” murmured the doctor before yelling at another nurse on her left. “You, we need an incubator. Call the anesthesia doctor, tell him we will do incubation here!”
That being said, another nurse ran away to find the doctor.
“1, 2, 3, air, 1, 2, 3, air….”
Ohno could only stare from the distance. There were a group of grown up people surrounding a small baby. A baby that had not even existed before three days ago, a baby that had been inside his lover’s tummy until three days ago, a baby that may be afraid enough to face the world.
One among the crowd whom Ohno thought was the doctor (because of the white robe she wore) pushed her second and middle fingers right in the middle of the baby’s chest. Another white dressed woman kept a balloon-like thing and pressed it every time the doctor said ‘air’ right after the third count. There was also another one with a needle in her hand standing near the infusion line, injecting something (something that maybe has maintained the baby’s heartbeat up until now, for whenever she’s done injecting it, the baby’s heart rate raised before falling down again in the next minutes) every now and then according to the doctor’s order. He also observed a nurse who kept telling what was shown on the monitor, things about saturation, heart rate, breath rate and other things that Ohno didn't understand at all. The said person seems like wanting to make sure that the crowd did not fall into silent, or maybe she’s trying to fight the beeping sound from the machine. And Ohno hated every sound and every voice he heard here.
“Epinephrine injection, 3, air…,”said the doctor while kept pushing the baby’s chest. The nurse with needle in her hand injected the infusion tube, making the beeping sound which had been in a very slow rate back to normal. For Ohno, it’s a normal beat, or at least it was almost the same as his.
There was another sound coming from the outside. Ohno turned his head only to see a nurse coming with another machine and a tube connected to it.
“Suction here.”
Soon, the sound of the machine roared around the chamber. Much to Ohno’s shock, the doctor (who had been replaced by another nurse) took a tube and inserted it into his son’s mouth. There was quite much liquid come out from his nose and mouth. Ohno winced at the sight. Do they have to do all those things? He didn't know how it felt but he knew for sure that it’s hurt if someone kept pushing your chest (Nino did hit him once or twice or maybe more in the chest, and it hurt him enough to learn to never make Nino angry again).
Ohno’s sure he could see bruises coming to form on his baby’s chest. And that balloon-like thing that kept blowing air into his son’s chest. Ohno knew that it’s helped him to get some oxygen, but oh please, he was sure that his son could breathe even without the help of that thing, despite the fact that the beeping machine said the other way round. And also the needle, only God knew how much Ohno wanted to pull it out and injected it to the nurses so they’d know how it felt like. And not forget to mention the roaring machine they called suction. Were they sure that it only suctioned the liquid? How could they tell if it also swallowed his baby’s lung or any other internal organs pass through his nose? And most of all, Ohno hated those beeping sound that kept repeating itself. He’s sure that he would be able to hear the sound for the rest of his life, and he just hated it because it made him aware how bad his son’s condition was and how harsh they have treated him. Ohno wanted his baby to be alive, but not like this, not with all the machines attached to his little body, not with that many people surrounding him like he were an object of a research, not with all the sounds like this.
Ohno didn't know where it’s gone wrong. It was right that his baby was born before his time, due to Nino’s too weak condition. The doctor had decided to deliver the baby before he hurt his mother (or father, or whatever they liked to call his Nino). But Ohno thought that the baby would be okay. He had been inside the womb for 8 months now, how could he be so weak? The doctor who operated Nino did tell him that there was only a slim chance for both of them to be saved. Ohno chose Nino in case if something happened, but when he heard the baby’s first cry, he thought the doctor was just playing joke at him, a joke of which Ohno couldn't found where the funny part was. But after these three days, Ohno’d learned that doctors never ever play any jokes on death. He only could see his baby condition getting weaker and weaker until it came to all these annoying voices.
Another voice added itself into the crowd. It seemed that the previous nurse had returned with the anesthesia doctor who immediately held a brief discussion, maybe about the baby’s condition, or maybe about who has won the last night lottery. Their voices were just too small to be heard, but soon the doctor nodded and started to make preparation. He took out a handle-like and a blade-like, what-a blade? But before Ohno could make any suggestion on why a blade was needed there, the doctor reached the handle and the blade altogether with a flashing thing. And here Ohno thought, what a great stuff doctors have, they even had their own shape of flashlight. Next the doctor took out a short big straw-like thing, learning from the previous one, Ohno didn't even wonder what the straw was doing there.
But then, Ohno’s heart fell to a stop when the doctor prepared himself in front of the baby’s head. Spontaneously, Ohno instructed them to stop, except for the nurse who kept reading the monitor.
“STOOOPPPP!!!” Ohno cried loudly. All heads turned to his direction. The anesthesia doctor froze in his place, still with flashlight-like thing raised in the air, ready to insert it into his baby mouth, and Ohno could’t see more.
“Ohno-san?” The doctor called him in a question tone.
“Just stop. Can’t you see he’s suffered enough?” Ohno tears started to build. “Just stop. Please.”
“But we have to. Your baby is in critical condition,” said the doctor again, trying to put her sense in Ohno’s mind. But Ohno had already had it enough.
“Just stop, will you? I won’t give you any permission to continue it.” Ohno couldn’t hold his tears anymore. “How much change can he make?”
“Under 20%,” answered the doctor, putting his stuffs done, and motioned the nurse to keep giving the baby oxygen.
“Then let it be,” Ohno took a very deep breath, “at least I want my baby to look like what he was when he’s born. Not with all bruises from every stuff that you all did.” Ohno was sure Nino might kill him if he knew that Ohno had decided to stop all the live supports for their baby, but Ohno understood Nino would do the same if he saw the baby’s condition for himself.
“If that what you’ve decided,” the doctor said. “We have to ask you to sign a paper. Please, follow me.”
As he’s following the doctor to his table and signing some papers, Ohno could see the other nurses started to stop their works, leaving the infusion and the oxygen mask still attached.
“Can I stay beside my baby?” Ohno asked.
“Of course. Pray for the best. Miracle might happen.” The doctor smiled and patted his shoulder.
Ohno walked slowly toward his baby. He sat on the chair which was prepared for him next to the baby box. Ohno held his baby’s small hand, and his heart clenched in a hurtful way when he got no reaction. The only thing that made Ohno certain that the baby was still there was just the beeping sound from the monitor. Ohno took a glance and found the sign was already red and the alarm was echoing. One of the nurses turned it off and Ohno smiled gratefully at her.
“You know, when the first time we knew that your daddy is pregnant with you, I felt like I never saw him shining as brightly as that. A miracle was happening inside his stomach. A miracle that comes from our love.” Ohno whispered it softly to his son while gripping his hand tighter. “Every second is like heaven to me, and I know your daddy feels no more less than what I do.
“You have to know that we love you, never thought other than that. Your daddy loves you so much even he didn't mind dying while delivering you. I, too, love you so much that I can't see more sight of you being hurt like this. We love you, we really do. If you decide to leave us, then know this, we will always remember you for the rest of our live. And wait for us there when the time comes, I'm sure we will meet again.” Ohno stood and kissed his baby’s forehead when he heard a long beep sound that telling him his baby has gone. Ohno stood still with tears flowing from his eyes until he felt a gentle pull. He wiped his tears and stared at his baby’s calm face. Ohno knew his baby will be much happier up there.
“Baby Ohno-Ninomiya’s time of death ….” Ohno heard the doctor said after she’d done the last check up to make sure that his son was really gone. “I’m so sorry Ohno-san,” Ohno couldn’t speak another word. He just nodded and saw some nurses released his baby from all the machines that attached at him. “We have to tell Ninomiya-san,” the doctor cut Ohno’s thought.
“I’ll do it,” Ohno said, even though he didn't know how to do that, but he knew that he had to be the one who told Nino about this.
-----
“Watch your step.” Ohno helped Nino to step forward. Nino was still in his recovery phase. He still couldn’t walk normally due to the surgery, so Ohno hold both of Nino’s hands and guided him to walk at the front, while Ohno walked behind him. It made them look like dancing.
“Slow down,” Nino’s giggling “Is our baby here?”
“Un, he’s here.” Ohno nodded and guided Nino walk to the place prepared by the doctor for their baby. “Here it is.”
Needless to say, happiness was shown on Nino’s face in every way. His mouth created a big smile and his eyes were shining. “He’s so cute.”
Ohno couldn’t be more agree than that. The doctor and the nurse had put their baby in a cute fabric, and from the outside of the room, their baby looked like he’s just sleeping.
“Can I hold it?” Nino asked excitedly and Ohno nodded. He helped Nino to put the baby in his arm. It was the time Nino realized something was wrong.
“Ne, Ohchan? Why is the baby so still?” Nino asked innocently and turned to face Ohno. “Ohchan, why is our baby cold? Aren’t babies supposed to be warm?” Nino asked again when he felt the baby’s cold skin under his fingers. Nino looked at the baby and Ohno alternately. “Ohchan, answer me! Ohchan, why is the baby not breathing? Ohchan, said something!” Nino screamed while hugging the baby tighter in one arm and tugging Ohno’s hand with the other.
Ohno fell to his knees and hugged Nino and his baby. “I’m sorry, Kazu. I'm so sorry,” Ohno cried on Nino’s shoulder.
“Noooooooooo!!” Nino cried, his face was already full of tears.“No! There must be a mistake here! Baby, please breathe. It’s your daddy. Please open your eyes, please, please breathe, pleaseee, baby- no-,”Nino cried out and rocked the baby in his arm in attempt to make him awake.“Please, baby please,” Nino sobbed in the baby’s ear. “Please, I haven't seen you at all, please show me that you’re still alive, please….”
“He’s already in a better place, Kazu. Let him go.” Ohno said softly to Nino.
“No, Ohchan, no!!” Nino cried louder. Ohno felt his heart break seeing Nino like this, but he could do nothing. He couldn’t bring the baby back.
“Please, Kazu,” Ohno rocked Nino gently, “let him go.” Ohno tried to take the baby from Nino’s arm who reluctantly gave up. Ohno put the baby back into the box and motioned the nurse to prepare the baby. Nino hugged Ohno and cried his heart out, kept screaming for his baby to return.
Nino was still sobbing in Ohno’s chest when the nurse returned, ready to bring him to the morgue and for further documents. Nino lifted his face up and looked at his baby.
“Can I hold him for one last time?” asked Nino, still sobbing, new tears running down his face. The nurse gave him the baby.
“I’m so sorry, baby. I didn't take a good care of you. I wasn’t even able to see you alive. All what I heard was only your crying voice when you were born. I love you. I love you so much. Please, forgive me for everything. I love you so much.” Nino hugged the baby tightly and kissed his temple, feeling the coldness on his skin by his lips. With those words, Nino returned the baby to the nurse and saw him being taken away. “Wait for us there ne~,” said Nino once the baby’d gone from his sight. Ohno hands held him tightly from behind.
