The lobster is an iconic element of the image of Prince Edward Island internationally. On my recent trip, I had many encounters with the species and its representation.

There was, for starters, my encounter with a prepared lobster at Fisherman's Wharf in North Rustico.

Visiting Summerside on my vacation felt odd. The last time I was in Summerside, Prince Edward Island's second and smaller city in the western portion of the Island, I was 17 and being trained to work for PEI Tourism. Before that, I had scarcely seen Summerside at all.

I reported yesterday on a lobster stranded in a St. Catherines parking lot and rescued by the local humane society. Sad news: as reported by The Globe and Mail, the lobster died overnight.

The Toronto Star carried Nicole MacIntyre's Hamilton Spectator article reporting on a lobster's rescue from a St. Catherines parking lot.

(Myself, the idea of repatriating the lobster to the east coast makes some sense.)

I felt faintly sad watching the lobsters waiting in this tank at the Sobeys on Dupont and Ossington for death (probably a painful one, going by the compelling arguments of David Foster Wallace's famous essay "Consider the Lobster"). Certainly they're far from being as free as the lobster uplifts of Charlie Stross' 2005 novel Accelerando.
