I was curious about students who got held back a year or started school late. Could I say a character is a Senior and be 19/20 if I explain why he/she is that age?

As long as you give a reason and clearly explain the events in the app, students can definitely be held back/have late starts/have taken a year off, whatever you like!

I have a rather specific question. Since this is an AU, would it be okay to have our characters as royalty of a made up country?

Making up a country is 100% okay, but unfortunately we're going to say no to royalty. However, minor nobility is acceptable!

Regarding scholarships, do they necessarily need to be academic, or can a student receive one on athletic merit? This may or may not affect who I decide to app.

I know we're looking at a normal Earth setting here, but since I am planning on mentioning dates/years in my history section I need just a little clarification in regard to the timeline; does this game take place in present day or did you have a different time period in mind?

The game takes place in modern day, 2011.

Lack of canon shouldn't be a problem at all; characters with few appearances would merely cross over slightly into OC territory. As long as you remain faithful to whatever information is canonly available, you'll be fine!
