Snagged from daria234 :)

1. My native language. English

2. Which languages I know. Some Spanish and Japanese, definitely not fluently.

3. Which languages I am learning, or want to learn. Still working on getting my Spanish and Japanese up. I've also worked on and off on ASL, Esperanto, and Russian. I'd really like to learn German and Welsh, but honestly ( Read more... )

I've been interested in ASL since "Switched at Birth" and still know a few things, although that of course wouldn't help me here in Austria as I don't think they are the same or even remotely similiar... :D Either way... I did enjoy the scenes where the characters were only "talking" to each other with their hands and stuff...

I used to watch my Anime in Japanese with english subtitles... I really loved it back then when I was still so much into that stuff :D

lol yeah, I think the American and various European sign languages are pretty mutually unintelligable. I learned a little growing up bc of a cousin with deaf children and my sibling taking ASL in school, but I really want to learn more bc I went to another cousin's wedding this year and his husband is deaf. I would have loved to talk to more of the wedding guests but couldn't bc so many of them were deaf to, so for next time lol

I've never seen Switched at Birth, but that sounds interesting!

Same! I never could get into the dubbed stuff, and now I rarely have the attention span to watch subbed stuff lol Which is one reason I'd like to get better Japanese, so I can watch stuff without it having to be subbed or dubbed.

はじめまして.
I only know hiragana and katakana, and I really need to practice more. So cool to know you speak Japanese!

はじめまして! I was never great at hiragana or katakana (or esp kanji!), so I think my speaking and understanding is a bit better than my reading. I'm working on it though! If you need a buddy for practice lemme know :)

Oh yeah, that would be great! I just have to figure out how to type Japanese characters with my keyboard.

Most of my classmates in uni ended up choose Chinese as their second language (language students at University of Oslo were required to study two languages, where one was considered the major of the course), because professors kept saying the grammar was easier and Japanese students had the bonus of already understanding how kanji works. Lol.

I chose Dutch as my secondary language :P

That's true, there is quite a bit of crossover with the kanji. I think my kanji abilities are bad enough that it would be very helpful for me though lol Dutch sounds very interesting though!

Dutch is such a weird language! It's a mix of Norwegian/Danish + German + English. The grammar is so similar to Norwegian, it actually made it really difficult (for me) to get the hang of. Since the words themselves (in written form, anyway) are so similar to Norwegian/German, I can read it just fine, but making up my own sentences and speaking it is pretty much impossible. Hahaha. The pronunciation of certain letters is also completely foreign to me.

I ended up ditching the language course in its second semester, but I did get an A in a Dutch literature class where we read whole novels in Dutch..... lol. Languages are funny.
