Cannot Lah!

Aug 01, 2008 19:30

After taking a poll using my Gtalk status message, we've concluded that one cannot eat Soup, Tandoori Chicken, Naan, and according to some, Custard-Jelly with chopsticks. I think one CAN eat jelly with chopsticks, but then i shall have to post a video to prove it. *Ahem* Video will happen when i'm more accomplished  with chopstick-kung-fu.

Importing Gum into Singapore is illegal :p unless it's dental gum. If you're caught they will fine you lah!

well, if you're bringing gum in for personal consumption, as you said, its ok. btw, yesterday, on my way to school, i saw this red bus that said "Buying, selling, being caught with cigarettes that haven't paid duty is illegal and a punishable crime." !!! They are referring to the ciggies brought in from Malaysia, an dont have those ghastly images on them, no?

Nope. Not gum is okay for personal consumption :) It HAS to be dental gum, like Orbit or something...

The following items are NOT allowed to be imported into Singapore:

* Chewing gum (except dental or nicotine gum)

From : http://www.customs.gov.sg/leftNav/trav/Dutiable+Controlled+and+Prohibited+Goods.htm

As for the ciggies - it's for any ciggie that comes from outside. A packet in Malaysia costs about SGD 4-5 when one here is SGD 10-13 minimum (or something like that). So you're allowed to only bring in one open packet for personal use and the rest have to be declared and appropriate duties paid. Else the packets are confisicated and you pay a fine too. A very hefty one at that...

I think you meant 'ingest' not 'injest.'

in jest: can't eat payasam with chopsticks.
:-P

interesting observation regarding the soup spoons and chopsticks. I always thought that was the twirl the noodles against and scoop up the broth, no?

aaaiya! yes, i did. and i call myself a writer! LOL. Corrected it now. thank you!
Payasam! I want Payasam :(
I thought about that was the main purpose too, but it is not! I've seen the older generation eat with just chopsticks. This soup spoon-chopsticks waltz is done for all food. You should see some of them trying to balance a portion of rice (placed in the soup spoon with chopsticks, one does not 'scoop' the rice into the spoon), topped with a boiled leaf of asparagus, then slowly dipped in the broth, poked with chopsticks to make it 'settle' and then eaten.
Noodles is even more fun to watch! Capture the slippery noodles with chopsticks, quickly place in plasticky soup spoon (noodles are trying to escape the spoon), quickly jab at the escaping noodles, and delicately place the remaining noodles hanging from the spoon into the spoon. Decorate contents of spoon, eat. repeat process.
:D

Your description of fighting the noodles is lyrical;
reminds me of Don Quixote fighting the windmills! :-))

Best wishes in your program.

Thank you!
I'm laughing at the images i realise this has created! (My Ex Boss from a music mag thinks i should get a degree in Journalism, and not Media and Communications.)

I've been missing something as usual :) When did you go to Singapore? Work or pleasure? Been to Mustafa's yet?

:) i never really made a post about it, and i dint send out my mailier, bro. So i've not intentionally kept you in the dark. Yes, Mustafa's is every Indian's lifeline to "Masala Maggi" and i've been there every time i've visited. Singapore is now going to be home for a couple of years i think. (this will mean tattoo #3. YAY!)
Ok, to answer your question, Singapore is study and pleasure. Study coz i'm here to do my Masters in Media and Communications, and pleasure coz i'm living with The Boy. ;P
I've been thinking of you.... Was listening to Miami - U2. Its got a very NIN feel to it....
Whats up with you? Aren't you ever on gtalk?

Crab! You cannot eat crab (full, in the shell) with chopsticks unless you prefer to chew it completely.

OTOH, I've eaten ice cream with chopsticks. No video, but I had witnesses around. Tandoori chicken and naan should also be possible once you learn to shred and cut with chopsticks.

oh, and the spoon thing - that's actually the way you eat. At most meals, many people would share a common set of dishes. Serve with the chopsticks, eat with the spoon.
