Summary: After a hard day and a thousand aching muscles, River comes to Kaylee's rescue.
---
It was finally night, with nothing but Serenity's low hum and distant, gentle footsteps to disturb Kaylee's relaxation. She sat perched on the edge of her bed, easing her shoes off aching feet, rubbing hands over the sore muscles of her legs.
They had spent the day planetside and things went about as smoothly as they usually did, which is to say not at all. A hell of a lot of running and then a lot of effort back on the ship to keep Serenity in the air through their hasty retreat and well, Kaylee was about ready to pass out for as long as she could.
Those footsteps were getting closer. They were slow, light and familiar. Kaylee watched the door of her hatch, listening, expecting them to pass her by but they stopped. She frowned at the gentle tapping that followed just a second later.
She didn't even bother pushing herself to her feet. The door was unlocked. "Come in," she called out. Couldn't be anyone dangerous aboard the ship, though she couldn't imagine who would be calling on her at this time of night.
The hatch opened and slender legs in big black boots appeared. River closed it behind her as she stood across the little room, eyes bright and curious, looking sombre and serious.
"River," said Kaylee. "There somethin' wrong?"
"You're tense," said River. "You hurt. It echoes."
"Been a long day," Kaylee replied, offering the start of a smile but even that seemed like too much effort.
"I can make it fade away," the girl said, raising her hands and wiggling fingers. "All in an instant."
"That's real nice of you," Kaylee said slowly, "but I better just get some shut-eye. Probably got just as long a day tomorrow."
River tilted her head and stalked forwards, completely ignoring Kaylee's protests but she found she didn't mind that so much. Because there was a dip in the bed as River climbed up behind her and slid hands firmly over her shoulders, slowly easing the tension from overworked muscles.
"Wow," she breathed.
Hands worked their way down her back, soothing and clever and River seemed to know just where to press to have Kaylee sighing in satisfaction. Time slunk by barely noticed, until River was pushing her down onto her back and tugging at her overalls, fingers plucking at buttons.
"It'll be better that way," she murmured. Kaylee didn't think to disagree.
There she lay with the buttons loose and the suit open a moment later; River had stopped at her waist, thankfully, and left her decency intact. There was nothing but a thin white cotton t-shirt to shield her top half from the cool air of the bunk, but that didn't much matter when warm fingers were massaging her hand, her wrist, her arm, eventually swapping to the other limb to give it the same attention.
It seemed natural when the touches moved to her shirt, to press over fabric and run along the line of her bra beneath it. Kaylee's breath caught but she didn't complain, didn't try to stop River.
River probably didn't know what she was doing, anyway.
Then they were kissing, and okay that should probably have made Kaylee think to stop it, but River's lips were warm and soft and intense and there was a hand on her stomach, just low enough that she started to stir lower down and feel the first hints of heat.
She lifted her hips obligingly when River pushed her overalls down past her hips, tugging them off all the way. River stopped then, and bit her bottom lip hard. Her eyes flickered up to meet Kaylee's questioningly.
Kaylee's cheeks filled with her embarrassment and she looked down sheepishly. "I like to feel pretty under all these oil-stained clothes."
There wasn't much need for discomfort after that as River's hands skimmed over the dark lace, a single finger dragging a slow, teasing trail between her thighs and her stomach that had Kaylee's muscles twitching and jumping and all her skin flushing as bright as her cheeks.
"I like them," said River, her tone abrupt and honest. Kaylee opened her eyes - she couldn't remember closing them - and caught the smile on River's lips.
"You should get some," she said. "Lace'd look real good on you."
River grinned. "I'll ask Simon to buy me some."
"On second thoughts," said Kaylee, "maybe you can just borrow some of mine, 'kay?"
Then, with not so much as a hint of a warning, River ducked low and kissed her over the lace. Kaylee gasped and sat up, muscles complaining at the sudden movement as she caught River's hands and pulled her up. "River," she started, but there wasn't really much she could say to follow that and she just shook her head.
Dark eyes studied her deeply and it was all Kaylee could do not to look away, and when River spoke it was in the quietest whisper. "You can't lie."
"What?"
"You want this."
"River, no," said Kaylee, but then there was a flash of something in River's expression, something dark and intense that took her breath away in an instant, and before she knew it Kaylee was stretched out on her back with her arms above her head.
River looked down at her, holding Kaylee's wrists tight in her grip. Her hair tumbled down and tickled Kaylee's neck, her shoulders, her arms. "Not hurting anyone," said River. "I'm just helping you relax."
Kaylee closed her eyes. Her skin burnt where one of River's hands skimmed over her stomach and dipped just under the lace, slipping into coarse hair.
"You do want this?" asked River, like she was pleading, her hand falling still. "You do?"
"Yeah," Kaylee replied. It was all she could manage. Clearly, she decided, she was as gorram crazy as the rest of the crew but there wasn't anything that could make her say no to this right now.
Not when River's hand pushed lower and then she was rubbing, all the softness and delicate movements gone in an instant, altered into quick, sharp, smooth movements that had Kaylee arching her back and moaning out long and low.
Heavy sparks of pleasure spread through her and all the aches, all the tension that the day left behind, were forgotten as she strained again River's grip on her wrists, her impossibly quick, impossibly good movements under the lace. She came swiftly, unexpectedly, with her breath caught in her throat and River's hand moving even more frantically.
With the last of her energy thoroughly expended, Kaylee started to drift off in moments. She felt light-headed but ache-free and happy, and just before sleep took her, she felt River climb into the bed and pull the thick blankets over them both.
They fell asleep with matching smiles.
