Summary: Iruka has his third date with the Serpent. Yeah, you know what's gonna happen. Pt3 - Next day awkwardness.

Genma woke up the next morning sore and tired, grinning like an idiot, Iruka wrapped in his arms. He liked sex in the mornings, had hoped to wake up to another round, but even he didn't feel up to it. He could only imagine how Iruka would feel when he woke. Genma shifted slightly, pulling Iruka closer. They both needed showers, the window needed to be opened, and the sheets, damn, who knew how bad the sheets were.

He felt a puff of breath against his neck, a whisper.

"Sorry, did I wake you?"

Iruka shook his head, groaning as he tried to rise. "Hurts," he whispered again, trying to stretch his arms and back.

"Things got a little intense last night," Genma admitted. "Can you walk?"

"Don't want to," Iruka said sleepily, rolling away from Genma.

"Go back to sleep," Genma whispered, dropping a kiss against Iruka's shoulder.

It was early, too early to be up on a Sunday morning, but Genma could smell coffee. Sighing, he stood up, chuckling because hell, even his legs felt wobbly. He found the robe on the floor and left it on the bed for Iruka to use, fishing through drawers to find another one. He turned to leave the room, then turned back. Coming to the window side of the bed, he opened it half-way, then bent over the bed, pulling the sheet from under Iruka and dropping it lightly over Iruka's body.

Genma left the bedroom and found his roommate up, sitting on the couch.

"There's coffee."

Genma nodded. "Yeah, I could smell it thanks." He poured a cup and sat down on a chair. "You came home early."

The man nodded. "The chase is still on," he grinned finally. "You were already asleep. I would say that was a bad thing except you look like hell. Did the kid turn the tables on you or something?"

"Bite me, asshole. I got laid, you didn't. But, no, he didn't, and he's not a kid.

The man got up and started to go into the bedroom. "Oh, good, at least you opened the window," he said from the doorway, yawning. "Can I sleep in my bed now?"

Genma waved his hand. "Sure, be my guest. But when he wakes up, I can't promise not to disturb you." He laughed at the sudden scowl on the man's face. "Not like that, Raido."

Raido relaxed, chuckling. "That good huh? I never expected to see the Amazing Genma Sex Machine brought down by one guy. Or maybe you're just getting too old?"

He laughed, returning Genma's rude salute in kind and continued into the bedroom.

Iruka woke up again when he felt the roommate enter the room. At least there was a sheet on him this time. He tried to stretch, biting his lip each time he moved. His legs felt numb as he sat up, scooting to the edge of the bed. Pulling the robe on, he tried to stand up, sinking to his knees with a tiny 'oh'. This is stupid, he told himself. It was just sex, it didn't hurt that much.

"You okay?" the man asked, staring at him on the floor.

Iruka nodded and waved. "Sure, fine. I think my legs went to sleep. Must have slept on them wrong or something."

"Or something," the man muttered with a barely-suppressed grin. He reached down and pulled Iruka up from the floor slowly, and Iruka held his breath, relaxing when he stood finally on his own feet. "How old are you?" the man asked suddenly.

"What?"

"Your age. How old are you?" the man repeated.

"22."

The man stared at him, then relaxed. "You look very young," he said awkwardly.

Iruka laughed suddenly, catching the man's implication. "If you thought I was underage, you should have said something last night."

"Probably," the man admitted sheepishly. "Still, you should have told him it was your first time."

"Why does everyone keep assuming I'm a virgin?" Iruka complained loudly. He shrugged the man's arms away from him, taking a few steps. He could walk now, thankfully. "I don't find it complimentary at all, you know."

"Oh." The man rubbed the back of his neck. "Sorry, my mistake."

Iruka left the room with a snort, ignoring the laughter that followed him.

He stumbled a little once, but made it to the dining table without a problem. Genma turned, surprise on his face, so Iruka smiled back and put his arms around the man, resting his head on Genma's shoulder. "Morning," he said sleepily. Genma moved to stand up, but Iruka waved him down. "I'm fine," he said softly. "Just a little ache."

Genma relaxed and nodded. "Coffee?"

"Please." Iruka sighed when Genma set a full cup in front of him. "I need a shower," he admitted after he'd drank half of it.

"Yeah, you and me both." Genma eyed him for a bit, then grinned. "How about a real bath instead?"

Iruka smiled back. "That would be great".

Genma smiled back. "Let me go heat it up, then when we're done I'll take you out for a real breakfast."

The bath was perilously hot, and Iruka hissed when he sat down. But the hot water worked the ache from his body, and he felt truly clean when he got out. He enjoyed the closeness of it, washing Genma's hair and back while Genma did the same. He had expected some awkwardness after last night, but never found it, just a calm acceptance of his presence. When they finished, Genma brought Iruka his clothes and an unused toothbrush and they dressed, looking much the same as they had the night before.

Genma took him to a little place Iruka had never even seen before, much less tried, and the food was good, not great, but better than what he could accomplish in his tiny half-kitchen. The whole thing felt like a quasi-date, not quite a date, but he didn't know Genma well enough to call it going out with a friend either. The awkwardness set in when Genma walked him back to his place and they stood at the doorway.

"Um, thanks?" Iruka offered, rubbing the bridge of his nose nervously.

Genma seemed equally affected, toeing his sandal into the cement under his feet. "Iruka..." he started, then stop. "The thing is..."

"It's okay. It's not like this was a real date, or anything, right?"

"Well, kinda. I'm not...a relationship kind of guy, you know? And I think you are."

"And it's not like we really know each other, as friends and all," Iruka nodded.

Genma closed his eyes, his jaw clenching slightly. "Fuck, this is hard," he said, almost to himself. When he opened his eyes, he leaned closer to Iruka, whispering. "The thing is, I want to see you again. I just can't offer anything more, not now. I can't promise you anything. And you deserve more than that."

Iruka stood against his door, thinking. It was insulting, on one level, what Genma was offering, and even Genma knew it. But on the other hand... Iruka took a deep breath and let it out. "I'm not expecting a relationship from you, not a romantic one," he said finally. "And you're right, I am that kind of guy, and I do deserve more than fuck-buddy status."

He reached for Genma's hand, stroking the palm lightly. "Do you think you could try to see me as a friend? So that when this burns out, I'll have that at least?"

Genma was still, his breathing a little uneven. "Iruka. I don't know. I can't promise."

"Genma, can you try? That's it. We may get to know each and find out we don't even like each other. I know you have friends, Genma."

They stood there a while, Iruka holding Genma's hand, and Genma letting him. It was full afternoon now - if Iruka was going to get his work done, he would need to start on it soon.

Genma spoke first. "I'll try to try," he said with a half-smile.

"That's all I'm asking," Iruka said softly.

"You're asking too little," Genma muttered darkly.

"Still too much, right?"

Nodding slightly, Genma looked around. They were alone, so he bent over and kissed Iruka quickly. "I'll hurt you," he said, his voice low.

"Probably. I'll live."

"One day I'll disappear from your life without even a goodbye. I'm not a nice person, not like you."

Iruka sighed. "I'll come find you and make sure you're okay," he promised.

"Why would you do that?"

"Because I am a nice person. And because that's what friends do. They check up on each other, even when one of them is being a complete dick."

Genma looked up and laughed. "I have to go get some sleep," he admitted finally. "We're leaving again in the morning."

"Same place?" Iruka asked, not expecting an answer.

"Actually, yes," Genma said with a wink. "I guess I forgot to tell you. We found the leak, so it's just a matter of mopping it up."

"That's good," Iruka breathed, relieved. He stared down at his feet. "Stay here," he offered suddenly.

"What?" Genma was aghast. "On that little bed? We can't both fit there."

Iruka shook his head. "I have work to do, Shiranui. Papers don't grade themselves."

Leaning forward again, Genma rested his head on Iruka's shoulder. "Just a nap," he said finally.

"Just a nap," Iruka agreed. He unlocked the door and pushed it open.
