Interesting tidbit (maybe it already came up in your reading): When the German public discovered that the Nazi government had a program for euthanizing pepole with disabilities, they actually protested against the government. One of the arguments opponents used against the Nazi policy was “if you do this to people who were born handicapped or who are elderly, then you will eventually do it to veterans who were wounded in combat”.
Which led the Nazis to give up the program in 1941... officially. Unofficially, Nazi functionaries continued to give institutionalized people overdoses and let them die of starvation, while pretending that the deaths were accidental.
