I should also mention that part of my objection to the whole gift-giving thing is that I am violently allergic to surprises. My brother says that I do not react well to the unexpected, and he's exactly right.
Now Christmas and my birthday are far from unexpected (I do own a calendar) but as I said, I'd rather be consulted before people buy things. They could float several ideas, and see how I reacted. Trying to figure out what other people want, without coming out and asking directly, also grates on my nerves. Among my many pet peeves is a deep-rooted dislike of being expected to read people's minds. I like to say "I got straight Fs in mind-reading all through school, and I haven't improved any since then."
