What I'm saying is that they may have been originally designed for different purposes. For all I know, they may have just been nothing but plans on paper or screens when the Empire got ahold of them and repurposed them. Kind of like how the DC-3 was originally designed as an airliner but became a very versatile warbird used as late as Vietnam ("Puff the Magic Dragon").
And I always thought that galaxy was nothing but artwork on the ceiling or wall...it's been years and years since I saw those movies.
It's funny - I was planning on running a homebrew RPG set in a slightly different SW world, starting at the end of A New Hope. My Death Star was going to be a literal fleet carrier: you pop that sucker into a system, and release a good sized fleet into the area. If it's a major war zone, you send in two or three Death Stars. Instead of a shitload of stragglers, you suddenly have a massive fighting group in system, in top condition, facing what is likely to be ships that are in need of some repair.
You're only the second person I've come across who thought of using the damned thing anything like what I'd come up with. (And I like the mining option - mind if I steal that, if I get the game going? *grin*)
