As you may have gathered, I have much going on at the moment, and not all of it great. But I thought I should at least report - for those who hadn't already heard from the thunder-stealing

"Ranger" can mean many things, and among rangerly types in the National Park Service, that term typically applies to those with law enforcement responsibilities. Among rangerly types, they call me an "interpreter" - I present the walks and talks, answer the telephones, and help visitors arrange their ideal experiences at the visitor centers. Other rangerly types perform research, manage natural resources, maintain roads, trails and buildings, or perform administrative and technical stuff

Congrats! You might see me out there on a horse sometime--hopefully I won't ever meet you due to some kind of emergency! But we always know that if we were to get in some kind of trouble, our local "flathats" are the world's best at rescue. Right now I'm feeling sorry for our state parks' staff--it's already pretty obvious they've been told to enforce parking like a bunch of fiends. And the guy at China Camp was locking up the gates to the parking lot at 7:55 last week, even though the sun was still visible behind McInnis. They're going to be mighty crabby by the end of the summer! Nobody gets into that line of work for the fun of writing tickets (I hope!)
And yeah, before I got into the National Park Service and worked extensively with the North Coast State Parks, I thought I would prefer to work within the State Parks, but until this state can get its financial shit together, I feel a touch leary of taking employment with them.
And about the hat ... um, yes? You get a uniform allowance at the start of your appointment, so you can use that to buy your hat, or you can buy it with your own money if you've already blown your uniform allowance, or you can just find one that somebody left behind (crazy bastard!) like I did. So they pretty much give you one, I guess.
