As if reading my sleep-deprived, illness-addled mind, the "My Pictures" screensaver just flashed a flurry of photographs from the end of my stint in Humboldt. I considered that, even as the current sickness seems to lose steam, that another illness might have a hold on me: homesickness.

Well, dude, how much is the cost of living there? $800 for a 2-bedroom trailer on a $10/hour clerical job type of shit? I don't know where you guys shop, but hippie/organic-ish stores don't have to be obscenely expensive. We go to the chains like Vons or Lucky's for general stuff, and Trader Joe's for everything else. I also get meats and seafood from my Asian market; it's much much cheaper. (and it's not dog meat or anything weird) lol
Relax... I bet when you get that kickass NPS ranger job here, things will get better.

We generally don't shop at chains as we've gone almost fully organic and try to buy as local as possible. Also, we're concerned with packaging of the groceries we buy (try to stay away from plastic, for instance). We're buying milk in glass jars, which they don't have at Trader Joes or the chains as those generally don't have stuff from local sources. We do a bout half our shopping at the Alameda Marketplace, which is godawful expensive (two bags of groceries = $100). At our favorite grocery store in Humboldt we would have gotten at least one more bag for that much money and we could walk to it.
The Husband has never been happy living in one place very long...
