From March of 1941 to today, a single NTSC receiver based television would be able to faithfully show you what was on television every day of every year. Color was certainly added in the 1950s, but the signal had to continue to work with black and white sets. To be fair, radio has changed quite a bit. FM started to become popular mid-century, and later gained stereo and digital information side channels. There are other variants of AM as well that are popular in other applications (single sideband, for instance). But original AM is still around, probably because an AM receiver is one of the simplest and cheapest consumer electronic devices you can make. It doesn't hurt that most radios are in cars, where audio quality is not a big concern to begin with. There's little reason *not* to keep AM around ( ... )
