Disclaimer: I have never read Twilight. I have never seen Twilight. I have no opinion of Twilight whatsoever, either for or against. I just thought this was amusing.
Excerpt from a review of the Twilight movie I was reading:
I find fictional mental unstability incredibly romantic!
Okay, but that reviewer has a good point. I was really thrown off by Meyer's versions of "vampires," but I went with it anyway. As the series went on, things got hella complicated but I loved the pseudo-werewolf details. I missed the classic vampire-ness liiiiiike... say... Anne Rice.
I am definitely not seeing the movie in theatres. Not gonna pay $8.
Dude, fictional mental unstability is HAWT! Just ask, uh.... Well, anyone we write! Yay!
I'm not a big fan of Anne Rice's writing, but I do respect that she kept a lot of "classic" vampire-isms and did away with others in some fun ways. I really don't have any interest in reading Meyer's books, but... from what I've heard, the vampires in them really don't sound like vampires at all. ^^;; And where's the fun in that? What makes vampires cool is all the traditional stuff!
I'll probably catch it on HBO or something a year or two from now. ^^;; Or maybe if someone owns it. That's the only way I can see myself seeing it.
If I hadn't already started my thesis I'd write it on the Twilight phenomenon, although I don't think I'm qualified to write about the history of the vampire myth.
Funny you should mention that... My friend Noelle IS writing her thesis on Vampires, although it's more about the common trope of Vampires almost always being beautiful in literature. Interesting stuff!
...Do you happen to have any references for these ugly 18th century vampires? I'd love to tell Noelle about it in case she wants to use it for her thesis.
I was neutral about it until the sparkles and something about someone falling in love with a new born and everything being explained by destined true love. Then I started avoiding it like the plague.
Watched some pirated clip of the movie on youtube. It was really difficult to watch just six minutes of this, so I think my head would blow up if I watched the whole thing. (If you're curious and don't mind being spoiled, clip is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=688St4KNv1w )
It was filmed here in Portland, though, so I feel all happy when I see all the mossy, foggy, damp-looking scenery.
“When you read the book…it’s like, ‘Edward Cullen was so beautiful I creamed myself.’ I mean, every line is like that. He’s the most ridiculous person who’s so amazing at everything...I think a lot of actors tried to play that aspect. I just couldn’t do that. And the more I read the script, the more I hated this guy, so that’s how I played him, as a manic-depressive who hates himself."
Hah! I knew Pattinson was an alright guy. Yeah I sat through an interview where the lead actress called Bella a blank slate (basically an empty shell of a mary-sue) right in front of Meyer and Meyer didn't catch the back handed insult. I loled.
The vampires not being vampires is a huge pet peeve of mine. simmilar to quake's dislike of faux-zombies. Which I agree with too.
*waves at Quake* first time comment, long time lurker, love your stuff! <3

What's really interesting is if you look at 18th century vampires. They're fugly, bloated, gross and definitely VERY unromantic.
...and were dreamed up by people who liked tabloids.

It's like chapter one from a book titled "HOW TO TELL A MOVIE IS PROBABLY GOING TO SUCK"
