D5100 is nice, yo; I've had a D5000 for two years c: if your budget's not too tight, though, I'd go for a better lens than the one in the kit. it's held up well for me but it's pretty shitty indoors and in low-lighting situations.
I don't have too much of a budget for lens atm (though it could change after graduation after I beg rich relatives for money LOL) but I'll keep that in mind. I'm a bit used to making ghetto light fixtures (last video project I did with a friend, we used his portable light reflector and a flashlight) so I'm not too worried.
hm, I think the kit lens would probably serve you okay there, then (as long as your subjects are not moving too much, and indoors, which is when the lens really sucks)! regardless, I would recommend buying a prime depending on the shooting you plan to do.
