Time has been speeding by. I'm making good progress on my dissertation database (I'm at least 2/3 of the way done), and though I wish it were going faster, at least it's going

If at all possible, save for a digital camera. Phones do not have the best cameras ever, and I think you may be disappointed if you try to use it for keeping big memories like you are likely to see.
That's a good point, but I'm not much of a photographer: I always forget to take pictures, and the pictures I take are pretty crappy anyway. I would probably want pictures from India, though.
Outdoors running! Hooray! I've just been saying feck all, and going running outside, anyway. But I am from wintery climes originally, and NO ONE likes to come running with me in these conditions ;)
I might try to accompany you on some outdoor runs when I'm back in mid-January... I usually manage to convince myself that it's worth bundling up if it's not too icy and it's at least 25-30 degrees out. Lately, though, that kind of self-talk has been failing... ;p
Depends on the quality of the camera on your phone.
Also, phones are ALWAYS good to have in emergencies, even if you don't use them - and if your phone is world band (many smartphones are) will still work over there.
Good point. I don't have the Droid Global, which would be AWESOME overseas, but the Droid 2 would probably still be helpful enough... and dude, not having to bring a stack of books would be pretty amazing...
I went to Sudan four time in the last year or so, and brought both digital camera and old smartphone, the latter to use as an ebook reader. I don't know if crime is worse in India, but it seemed to me an entirely viable way of operating. Since I got my new smartphone, which has a camera, I've been leaving the digital camera at home when I travel, but I am not happy with the results. I would say, get good insurance and take the lot. (And of course be careful when there.)
Yes, I plan on being really careful. I'm also trying to start preparing for other safety precautions, e.g. not drinking water unless it's been bottled and boiled, and so on.
I'll take some more pics with my smartphone and decide if I'm happy with the quality. I'm not a good photographer and I tend to forget to take pictures anyway, so I'm not sure that it's worth buying and then schlepping around a camera if I can get decent-enough results with a phone.
