Author Note: ...Blame
fiktioraja for this. Blame her so bad.
We've been having these fic-challenges. And this challenge was to, well, write something we would never ever normally write.
Okay, it has several elements that I don't usually write. Like... multiple characters all stuffed into one fic, the fairytale thing that I'm not good at, humour I've been unable to do well for quite some time, an actual plot (that's rare when talking about my work) and... well... me trying to be imaginative and failing.
It's just not my thing. I've tried to make it my thing in here as you can probably see. But it's been hard.
But in case you're bored... fine. Read it. I wrote it anyway, why not post...
Masquerade
The central city of a faraway kingdom was in despair and complete disarray.
The king of the kingdom, the almighty King Johnny, had lost his most precious and beautiful son to the wizard of all ages, more commonly known as Nishikido Ryo. The wizard lived in a high tower by the riverside, right outside the great wall surrounding the king’s kingdom, keeping the citizens safe and sound from the threat he held.
Nishikido Ryo was everything an ordinary human could ever want - he was handsome, talented, witty and able to produce everything he ever wanted to himself. But there was one thing he couldn’t do, and that was to create a human being he could love and cherish. Magic was fun and useful, but with no one to share it with, no one to grant gifts he could make or surprise and entertain day after day, days grew long and boring for him.
So, as years passed, he decided that it was time for him to find himself a human being to lock in his tower, to imprison until he could feed the Stockholm syndrome with his magic and swoon to love himself. Surely he didn’t have many criterions for the person, otherwise it would’ve been way too difficult.
The person just had to be particularly beautiful and graceful, charming and swooning, witty and intelligent, interesting and never lacking attitude, speaking his mind. Surely it couldn’t be a task too hard? Why should he sink any lower than that?
He was proven wrong as he grumpily sat up in a tree, stalking the king’s messengers and citizens leaving the great wall’s protection, no one particularly pleasing him.
That was, until one day when the king’s son Kamenashi Kazuya decided to flee from under his father’s power.
When no one heard about the young son for several days and the whole kingdom was driven crazy looking for him, a very unlucky and unfortunate Knight Taguchi Junnosuke finally stumbled upon the truth, making the biggest breakthrough of his entire life. Almost literally stumbled, since he had lost the control of his unfortunate horse, trying to hang on to it, lost in the forest until he finally fell, ending up in the deep and cold river.
“Hrr,” was all he managed to stutter as he got up and spat a few small fishes from his mouth back to the water, climbing back to the ground while dripping water. While squeezing his hat dry, he looked up to the tall and stony tower rising to the skies next to him. From a window he saw the elegant Prince Kame having a hand-to-hand combat with the Wizard, ripping his hair as the other one wailed loudly and tried to poke him with his magic stick.
Being too scared to invade the situation all alone, he ran back to the woods.
He was lost for five days before he found his way back to the river, finally deciding it was better to walk aside it to find his way back to the kingdom, laughing at his own stupidity. Of course this part of his story was sugar-coated as he faced the King himself, telling him about what he saw, explaining his delay with a story of running from a hundred bewitched birds, trying to rip his eyes out with their sharp and long nails.
The strongest, finest and most able young knights were called together before the King, who pleaded them to bring him back his son, promising to let the one who managed to save him from the evil wizard marry him.
Young Knight Taguchi was however ditched from the group at this point after blurting out why the king assumed any of them would want to marry a man. Even though he tried to explain himself, he was left with a broken heart and a crushed dream as the others nobly accepted their task.
The participants for the task were Knights Akanishi Jin, Tanaka Koki, Ueda Tatsuya, Nakamaru Yuichi and Yamashita Tomohisa. As one would expect, none of them was really as able and intelligent as they pretended to be, too young and foolish to actually have achieved anything. Old King Johnny however didn’t want his son to marry anyone over the age of 26, so the older and more knightly knights were cut out from the crew.
The Wizard Ryo heard of the King’s order and dragged young Prince Kame to the top of the tower with himself, bewitching the whole way from the yards to the very top after himself to prevent the threats from the soon-to-be invaders. The young prince, prideful and stubborn he was, never quite appreciated his company nor the gifts and promises, no matter how hard he tried.
“I want a man that can defend himself, be more than just empty promises and tries,” he stated while turning his back to him, leaning out of the window to breathe in the fresh air, wind blowing his hair gracefully. “I want someone who can protect what’s important to him, prove his love and show courage beyond my imagination.”
And Wizard Ryo vowed to keep him safe from the invaders, to prove his power and affection to the young prince by protecting him from the knights from his father’s kingdom, protect him from the promises his father made for him.
When the morning arrived, the five Knights started riding towards the tower with their horses, everyone competing to be the first one. Akanishi Jin led the bunch, laughing cockily and mockingly, followed by Yamashita Tomohisa who waved his sword unnecessarily in the air. Tanaka Koki was quickly catching up with them, left behind in the beginning as he had realised that his horse’s tail wasn’t braided like he wanted it to with shiny golden jewellery. Ueda Tatsuya held his head high as his wary eyes detected the scenery, waiting for the complications he was sure were ahead. Knight Nakamaru Yuichi whined to himself as he warily followed, hoping the others to fall for the traps at first, sparing his unlucky ass.
Kamenashi Kazuya sighed and shook his head as he saw the bunch enter the grounds, muttering an annoyed “idiots” under his breath and turning his eyes to rather look at the white and puffy clouds, anything but the torment going on under him.
Wizard Ryo looked down from the window, standing behind Kame and waving his long wand in the air, starting the show with a pleased smirk on his face.
Meet Yamashita Tomohisa, a knight like no other.
He was riding his horse, singing the newest hit song stuck in his head. He was excited, like a child with a new game to play, making dramatic faces and trying to poke Knight Akanishi’s horse’s hip with his sword.
Needless to say, on a mental state he was like a hopeless and spoiled child.
Well, at least he had a nice smile. That’s something to be proud of.
They were in the middle of the grounds already, Akanishi’s horse speeding up and quickly leaving him more and more behind. Knight Yamashita was, of course, very unhappy with this fact. The fact that Knight Koki was only about fifteen metres behind him anymore didn’t help his mood and he grunted, pouting as he urged his own horse to hurry up.
A horrible voice cut the air and Yamapi fell from the horse’s back in shock, jumping up and screaming as hundreds of ducks barged from the river, all of them nearing him second by second.
“DUCKS!” he squealed in horror and ran, trying to avoid getting hit by the riders from behind himself, hissing as he fell over as Ueda’s horse bumped into him slightly. And he swore he saw a pleased smile on the man’s lips.
This angered him and he threw his sword after the man, his aim bad and the distance too far to actually hit him.
After that, he remembered the ducks again and turned to them in horror, trying to pull his sword from his side before remembering he had thrown it away.
“OH FUCK, DUUUUCKS! RUUUN!” he screamed in horror and ran, the army of the ducks making a horrible noise as they chased him in a circle.
And so we can forget about the story of… well… this unfortunate knight and his fear for birds that didn’t even reach his knee.
“I guess he did have a nice smile,” Prince Kame sighed as he watched the scene below him.
The other young men had reached the front door. It was so heavy that they had to wait for all of them to gather and get over their obstacle by combining their strength, shooting each others with murdering looks. Nakamaru Yuichi whimpered with his shoulders high, trying to avoid the stares of the others.
They all ran in to the first floor, greeted with an elegant view that Wizard Ryo was proud of. It was actually done by a citizen he had kidnapped for five years to complete his work. However, the poor man had gotten lost to the woods and no one ever heard of him since, so he didn’t really see the point in informing anyone about it. Better take appraisals than hear judging grumbling.
Knight Ueda snorted amusedly as he saw a bear’s head on the wall. He was not taken by the view and was first to keep moving forward, the others stumbling after him, Akanishi almost falling over as he hit his toe to the leg of a table. Others passed him and he cursed loud.
Ueda had just opened the door leading to the stairway before he heard and awful creak, barely even managing to turn his gaze upwards before some thick, brown and slimy liquid splashed over him from a bucket, the bucket itself hitting him in the head, making him yelp in pain and fall over.
As if it wouldn’t have been enough with the smell, as Ueda had risen up and was wiping his eyes, stepping to the first step, the step sank a little.
A loud ‘puff’ rang in the air and the whole narrow staircase was filled with feathers, sticking to the slimy Ueda who kept coughing and spitting, falling over again as others ran over him on their way upwards. Akanishi couldn’t help turning back to glance at the feathery Ueda amusedly and pointing at him with his finger, letting out a mean laughter. Ueda tried getting up but slipped, falling back again and hitting his head, losing consciousness, being left on the staircase to lie like an executed hen.
Well, hens never really were too lucky, were they? Neither were midgets. So it kind of fit him.
Prince Kame shook his head, following the situation from Wizard Ryo’s bewitched plasma TVs. He rubbed his temples and closed his eyes. Nishikido Ryo nodded with a wide smile on his face and laughed mockingly, thinking about actually bewitching Ueda into a hen to decorate his grounds. He left the thought quickly, for he was quite sure that Prince Kame wouldn’t appreciate it too much.
The knights reached the second floor, Koki ripping the backside of Jin’s shirt, the other one growling furiously and Maru sneaking as invisibly as possible after the two to avoid getting involved. But as they all got fully into the room from the staircase, their mouths dropped. Nakamaru Yuichi’s face had never been as scarlet and he coughed to his fist nervously. Akanishi Jin whistled.
The room was filled with beautiful ladies for all tastes, more beautiful than they had ever seen before. There were ten of them, giggling, laughing, waving and motioning for them to come over. Akanishi Jin’s eyes took in the slender shapes of their legs and the size of their breasts while Nakamaru Yuichi covered his eyes. Koki bit his lip and started to make his way to the following staircase, being pulled back by one of the girls and swept into a dance.
Jin coughed for several times and bowed politely before cursing loudly to himself as he made his way to the staircase again, Maru grabbing a hold of his shirt to guide him as he couldn’t see with his covered eyes. Tanaka Koki yelped and ripped himself away, rushing after the two.
“Damn, those breasts were huge,” Jin hissed as he started running up the stairs again, his hands curling to fists. “If I wasn’t a gentleman enough not to leave saving a helpless beautiful man to a wizard, I would’ve definitely wanted to spend more time with them!”
Koki hit his head and accused him of being an idiot. And up in the tower, Kamenashi Kazuya sighed, not amused. He crossed his arms and rolled his eyes.
“Well, I guess they were quite big,” he reasoned and looked down at his flat chest, pouting.
The knights didn’t last long however, before there was a wide gap in the staircase. The three of them stopped, peeking down. Nakamaru Yuichi covered his eyes and put a hand to cover his mouth, horrified as he looked down.
Knight Jin went some way back before he ran and jumped as hard as he could, managing barely to make it to the other side, letting a mocking “ha!” out of his mouth and raising his fists to the air before waving the others a goodbye. Koki bit his lip and followed.
“…But I don’t have that long legs,” Knight Maru complained and looked down again, gulping. He took several deep breaths before going back as well and starting running.
However, he found himself unable to make the jump, too afraid to fall down. His game was played as he was left there on the staircase wailing to himself, hearing the sound of the others’ steps quickly fading.
Knights Koki and Jin didn’t get along. That was something that was clear to everyone who knew the two.
They had the same taste in men and women, often ending up competing over them. It got physical and it got bad with nasty bruises and several broken bones, black eyes and ripped hair. This had gone on since the two of them had been five years old, both falling for the same pretty girl in the town.
Often they scared their affections away with their aggressive behaviour. Kame wasn’t scared, but had to raise his eyebrows in surprise as he watched the two of them crashing to the third floor half wresting, neither really even seeing ahead of them. It was a wonder they hadn’t fallen in the stairs.
Koki was the first one to notice the threat around them, trying to pull away from the fistfight and hissing at Jin, trying to make him shut up. Knight Jin however wasn’t as smart when he was fighting for something he really wanted and Koki was knocked down with a fist on his face.
“You are so not ruining this one from me! Go and hook up with one of the chicks downstairs!” Knight Jin yelled furiously, the sound echoing from the walls. Knight Koki paled as he quickly got on his feet and ran, leaving Jin behind to wonder what was wrong with him.
That was, until he saw fifty small Chihuahuas running after them, growling and barking furiously with their high voices. And Knight Jin could swear that those little bastards were after his blood.
“WAIT FOR ME, YOU JERK, WE’VE KNOWN SINCE CHILDHOOD!” he screamed in horror as he ran after Koki, ripping him back from his shirt. “YOU ARE SO NOT LEAVING ME IN HERE!”
And so the two of them ran as fast as they could, up to the stairs and forward, still hearing the sounds of the dogs after them. As they reached the next floor they slammed the door behind them shut and panted, Koki’s feet giving in as he let out a relieved laughter.
“…I guess you’re here, then,” Kame said from the other side of the room, looking at the two of them. They turned to him quickly, eyes wide and panting. As Jin took a quick step forward, Koki wrapped his arms around his leg and knocked him over, crawling over to him to get ahead, but Jin reversed their positions and Koki started pulling his hair.
“…Children,” Kame complained and turned away to look out of the window again. Wizard Ryo went over to the two knights and pulled them up from the fronts of their shirts, keeping them apart as they panted and still tried to get to each others’ throats.
That was the first time the two of them noticed him.
“IT’S THE WIZARD!” Knight Jin shouted and pointed at him.
And the two rivals combined their powers, sending all three having a fight on the floor, ripping each others’ hair, scratching, hitting, biting and kicking each others.
“AAAAAAAAAAA!” Knight Jin screamed in horror. “STOP TOUCHING MY COLLAR, KOKI! IT’S SENSITIVE!”
Prince Kame sighed and walked over the three of them, opening the door to make his way down from the tower and away as the others were too distracted to notice him.
He was however stopped as the door opened before he could quite reach the handle. He was pulled to a tingling kiss. The sound of the fight behind him stopped as everyone stared in shock.
Kame sneezed as a few feathers tingled his nose and stared at the sight before him. Most of the feathers were gone now and Knight Ueda Tatsuya had a very strict face as he offered his hand for the prince.
“YOU!” the three men shouted from the floor, pointing at him. And Ueda Tatsuya smirked as he pulled Kame with him, locking them up to the tower and starting to lead him down the stairs.
Kamenashi Kazuya smiled. Because from Ueda Tatsuya’s face, he could tell that this wasn’t going to take him back to the kingdom, wasn’t going to take the glory of marrying a prince of the kingdom, wasn’t going to treat him like property.
“I always liked you the best,” he stated. “Always.”
And Ueda Tatsuya smiled and kissed him as they passed Yamapi running from the ducks and headed to his horse.
“Me too,” he said as he helped Kame up. “Me too.”
