My sources say that the story is by Tobias Wolff, and you can find it either in the Sept. 25, 1995 issue of "The New Yorker", or in the book "The Night in Question", which collections a bunch of shorts by Wolff. (Hmm, maybe I will seek out this thingy, at that.)
