It's actually a really satisfying episode-- it just has a WTF twist at the end. But there are a lot of good aspects, too.
I don't know. I have a very high embarrassment squick, so I've spent this whole series pausing every twenty seconds to wince. The last episode was no different. And David is SINFULLY pretty, so.
Ahhh. I think I can handle a WTF twist. Especially if David is sinfully pretty, embarrassment issues aside since I'm a bit strongly in tune with moments like that too. (SDoaCG season 2 I'm lookin right at you, babe.) So! I will give this a shot.
Yeah, I had Big Hairy Issues with it, actually. Mostly because all of the women in Dave's life treated him as less-than-a-person. Rita, Sarah, his ex-wife... I dunno. I really struggled to find someone (other than the TRULY adorable kids) to like on a character-level (I liked Dave on a mouth-watery level because, seriously come on, David Tennant is STUPIDLY hawt).
I didn't watch the last two episodes for just this reason. I couldn't figure out why Dave even liked any of the women (perhaps he was clueless) and although VERY pretty to watch DT couldn't change the fact that I only liked the kids.
David is a fantastic actor, and a hot side of beef, to boot, so for those reasons I enjoyed the series. BUT...his character was kinda rubbish, you know? The whole time I kept shouting at him, like: "PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR KIDS! Yes, even the grown-up one with the kid of her own! GIVE LUCY A HUG! No, DO NOT have sex with your dead wife's best friend with Evie in the next room."
Perhaps it was meant to be seen as part of his persona as a "flawed character", but he seemed only ever able to focus on one thing at a time: finding Lucy's dad, having a relationship with Sarah, taking care of his younger kids. I kept thinking, "Why did you even have this many kids when you're so rubbish at taking care of them???"
Most of it wasn't resolved to my satisfaction, either. For instance, his older daughter just forgiving him without any effort on his part. And his kids being all pro-Sarah all of the sudden when they reacted so violently to finding out their father was dating her to begin with.
Here's my take on things: the scenarios past the first episode were just ludicrous melodrama. DT's performances alone within those frakked-up scenarios made it worth watching. He remained totally believable throughout, and that's really a testament to his mad skills as an actor, good looks or no. The fact that he angsts beautifully was gravy. So, while the script was rubbish, I still contend that he put in a BAFTA-worthy performance.

I dunno. Mixed feelings, for sure!
