As I was flipping through the local paper this week, I ran across a letter praising the Zoning Board of Appeals for denying Vineyard Church a variance that would have allowed the church to expand. The writer was glad that the board's judgment had improved since that dark day in 1997 when it heedlessly granted a similar variance to First United ( Read more... )

At first I read this as "Aidan Montessori School" and i nearly dropped my computer. Because this is exactly what's happening in our neighborhood - complaints about the Montessori School and an incredibly vicious fight over whether a hotel that's been here longer than any resident I know of, should be allowed to cut down trees on its own property (as part of some construction). The residents' group passed a "we're never going to change our minds, no matter what" resolution then were shocked - shocked, I tell you - that the hotel stopped discussing the matter with them.

Having just battled with a small-town ZBA over whether my friends and family are too "Waco" to live among them (!), I am not at all surprised.

Oh yeah, NIMBYs hate schools even more than they hate houses of worship. In south Kenwood, I remember NIMBYs wanting to keep an old mansion vacant (and harbouring drug dealers) instead of allowing a developer to convert it into an old folks' home. They thought old people would bring "cars and ... dogs!!!!"
