Summary: For as long as he can remember, Yunho has been dreaming about a person he loved more than life itself, dying because of his fault. When he and his investigation team are put on a gruesome multiple homicide case he meets a journalist, Kim Jaejoong, whose close resemblances to the person in his dreams are more than striking. However, as the case starts to escalate, and more and more people die, he starts to realize Jaejoong might not be as innocent as he seems.

Yunho eyed the mess in front of him, took a deep breath, closed his eyes and counted to ten, then shouted, “Changmin!”
“I didn’t do it!”
“How the heck did you manage to gather so many flyers?! You can’t even see my desk anymore,” Yunho exclaimed, disbelieving. “How am I supposed to work like this?!”
Changmin eyed the massive stash of paper, contemplating. “Well, I could sort it out for you, divide it in piles of favoritism and waitresses sex appeal, then-“
“You are so going to get fired one of these days,” Yunho sighed as he walked towards his desk, stepping over several boxes before picking one of the flyers of his desk. “What are these anyway,” he wondered out loud before he read ‘Sam Gyeop Sal special deal, more pork belly for less Won!’.
He decided not to comment on it.
“Oh, that place is really good,” Changmin nodded, only just managing to prevent Yunho from slapping him on the head when Tiffany entered the room.
She didn’t even notice the mess on Yunho’s desk as she looked at them sternly. “You two, follow me.”
Yunho gave Changmin a questioning look, but the other shrugged, indicating he had no idea either.
Silently they followed Tiffany out of the office and slowly came to realize she wasn’t the only one who was in a bad mood. Both office and field workers seemed to be disturbed by something, running around their offices and casting each other worried, stressed out glances. Yunho frowned, Changmin leaneding towards him.
“This feels very familiar,” he whispered, eyeing several officers running past them to make their way outside. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”
“I hope not,” Yunho whispered back as they entered the meeting room. Several other agents were already settled there as Donghae stood in front of the white board, looking like the epitome of pissed-off.
“Glad you decided to join us,” he snapped at them sarcastically. “Now that everyone has managed to clear some of their precious time, can we finally get to business?”
Changmin gave Yunho a charming raised eyebrow, which Yunho replied with a shrug.
After Donghae turned on the beamer and showed a picture of a heavily mutilated corpse, the reaction was almost immediate. Several people shifted uncomfortably in their chairs, looked away or grew pale as Changmin let out an impressed whistling noise. “Now that’s creative.”
Donghae’s obvious, not amused glare made him shut up fast however.
“Yes, very creative,” he sneered, “now if one of us was as ‘creative’ as this we might actually be able to solve this case!”
Yunho had to try his utter best not to look at Changmin as he saw Tiffany eyeing him intently. She couldn’t possibly know, could she?
“Results, I want them,” Donghae snapped shortly, “starting now. Coroner Ryeowook, you first!”
Yunho swallowed as he saw his turn drawing closer and closer. What was he going to say? ‘We might have a potential suspect but I sort of have a crush on him so I’d rather keep him to myself, thank you very much’. Yeah, that was totally going to work.
Changmin nudged him in the ribs, giving him a very knowing look as Yesung took the next turn. Silently Yunho shook his head, praying Tiffany wasn’t able to see what they were doing. His friend raised his eyebrow, mouthing a ‘then when?’ which he replied by simply shaking his head again. Even though he didn’t press the matter any further, Changmin’s eyeroll and reluctant leaning back in the chair showed his opinion clearly.
“Interrogating officer Jung Yunho, your team’s findings please,” Donghae said in a snappy tone.
“So far nothing new yet, sir,” Yunho replied quickly. “We are still analyzing the previous eyewitness’s reports, but haven’t been able to find anything. Weren’t there any eyewitnesses this time?”
Avert the question, go me!
“There weren’t,” Donghae replied sharply as he looked up at Yunho. “Tiffany told me you and your team have been spending hours working over time. Don’t tell me you used all that time just to analyze eyewitness reports.”
He shifted his gaze to Tiffany, who resumed her staring intently, and back to Donghae. Uh-oh. “I’m sorry sir, we just wanted to be very thorough.”
His boss raised his eyebrow, shook his head but moved on to the next. Yunho drew a shaky breath, receiving himself another glare from Changmin before he met Tiffany’s eyes. She looked very unconvinced.
---
“If you want to fuck him you should just do so already,” Changmin exclaimed. “Then we can move on to the part where we’re actually investigating him and-”
“I don’t want to fuck him,” Yunho replied, annoyed, corridor after corridor speeding by him as he walked towards the front hall, Changmin following in his shadow. “I just don’t want to place suspicion on him if we’re not even sure about anything yet.”
“Boss,” Changmin started skeptical as they turned around the corner. “Lying isn’t your thing, just drop the act already.”
“I have no idea what you’re-”
“You’re protecting him, obviously. All the evidence is beaming in our faces and we’re not doing anything! Give me one good reason why.”
Yunho decided to go into ignore mode. He had to admit it was a little immature, but he had no idea what else to do. He knew Changmin was right about the protecting part, and if it had been someone else he would’ve probably taken action already. But it just felt wrong somehow. If only Jaejoong would pick up his phone…
“You talk to him,” Changmin sighed at Kyuhyun as he caught up with them. “I give up!”
Kyuhyun looked at Yunho, shook his head in a way you would with a hopeless child, and returned his attention back on Changmin. “I was going to talk about that,” he said as they reached the hallway and nudged them to halt for a second. “Because he’s here,” Kyuhyun whispered, and nodded towards the entrance doors.
---
Impatiently Jaejoong shifted from one foot to the other, giving the many cops who eyed him dismissive for his obvious journalist like appearance an equally revolting look.
“Jaejoong-ssi?”
Immediately Jaejoong forced a quick, but pleasant smile on his face as he turned towards the cop. “Yunho-ssi, how are you today?”
“I think you know very well how I’m doing,” Yunho replied frowning. “Another murder was committed.”
“Ah, yes, I heard,” Jaejoong said, nodding slowly. He had to be careful now, he still wasn’t sure how that mind-reading thing of Yunho worked, but he wasn’t going to risk it. “I wanted to talk to you about that, do you have time?”
Yunho frowned, obviously not quite trusting him as he eyed him hesitantly. These looks he kept giving him made Jaejoong slightly nervous, as if Yunho could see right through him, but he nade sure to keep his face expressing innocence however, adding a small smile to emphasize his good intentions.
“Sure, just... wait a second,” Yunho said finally, giving Jaejoong a smile in return but still looking hesitant as he turned around to walk towards his colleagues.
Jaejoong glanced at them in what he hoped was an uncaring manner. The man was useful, but he sure hoped he wasn’t going to be difficult, or they would have to change their plan, again.
“Okay, let’s go,” Yunho said shortly after he had returned, not looking at Jaejoong nor at his colleagues as he made his way outside. Jaejoong frowned a little. Why did Yunho’s co-workers keep staring at him like that? He shrugged the thought off and followed Yunho outside. Whatever it was, he hardly doubted that it would bring him any real trouble.
---
Intensely Yunho looked at the pretty man across of him, Jaejoong’s eyes all innocent, his posture completely at ease. It was really hard to imagine him being capable of doing anything against the law. He caught Jaejoong’s eyes and quickly looked away. He’s up to something, don’t fall for it, you have to find out.
“You’re wondering if I have anything to do with the murders don’t you,” Jaejoong said, still looking like a perfect angel as he looked up at Yunho, a small smile ghosting over his lips.
Are your questions ever subtle?
“Maybe...”
“You’re pretty see-through Yunho-ssi,” Jaejoong said, stirring the straw in his ice-coffee as he tilted his head a little. “Why don’t you just ask?”
“Just ask?” Yunho repeated, uncomprehending.
“Yeah, just ask me if I shot the guy. His name was Park, right?”
What are you up to... Yunho shifted in his chair uncomfortably as he tried not to get lost in Jaejoong’s eyes. He was somehow feeling more drawn to him than ever, maybe it was because Jaejoong somehow appeared more relaxed, more calm than he had done before. It was nerve-wracking. “Did you take Park Daesung’s life?” he asked finally, seriously wondering which answer he wanted to hear.
Jaejoong looked back, strange sparkles twinkling in his eyes.
Is he enjoying this?
“No, I didn’t.”
Yunho nodded, Jaejoong had spoken the truth, but he hadn’t expected it otherwise. Still he couldn’t shake off the feeling of discomfort as he proceeded the conversation. “Where were you yesterday evening? I tried to call you...”
“Why?” Jaejoong replied with a playful undertone. He really did seem far more at ease than he was earlier. Less tired, even more attractive. “Did you miss me?”
“Just answer the question.”
“Hm,” Jaejoong started hesitantly, “I’m not sure if you’ll like my answer...”
“Try me.”
“I had sex with two guys.”
Yunho almost coughed his coffee all over the table, quickly taking the paper napkin Jaejoong handed to him to hide his embarrassment. Okay, that was not what he had expected.
“Told you so,” Jaejoong said, entertained.
Yunho replied with a short groan, throwing the napkin aside, annoyed. It was like something dark had set over him, and he was pretty sure the murder had nothing to do with it. He looked up at Jaejoong, close to glaring as he saw the other still smiling at him amused, slowly stirring his ice-coffee instead of drinking it.
“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you,” Yunho stated, still annoyed. He knew he had to keep this professional, but it was hard with the irritation he felt. The need to protect Jaejoong seemed ridiculous now, he obviously seemed very capable of taking care of himself.
Jaejoong chuckled a little as he looked down on his coffee. “How can I not, Yunho-ssi?” he smiled as he looked up again. “You’re so easy to read.”
“Whatever,” Yunho replied. Maybe it was better to get this conversation over with as soon as possible, before he would start breaking something. Images of hands that weren’t his touching Jaejoong in the most intimate way kept wandering through his mind. “What was it you wanted to discuss?”
“Did I make you angry?” Jaejoong asked, tilting his head to the side. Whenever he did that he looked so huggable it made Yunho a little confused. It annoyed him to know that Jaejoong was probably very aware of that fact. “Should I apologize for something?” Jaejoong asked.
Yes, for letting someone else touch you. “No, of course not. Just lack of sleep,” Yunho replied shortly, “can we keep this professional please?”
Jaejoong smiled. “As you wish,” he said and shifted a little in his chair, resuming to stir his ice-coffee. Why he didn’t just drink it wasn’t entirely clear to Yunho. “I came here because I have some information regarding JYP, I thought you might be interested.”
Yunho couldn’t really care less about JYP at that moment. “What is it?”
“His location,” Jaejoong said as he looked down at his coffee. “I wanted to go and check it out on my own but... hm...” he hesitated.
“But what?”
“Do you know a club called Wonder Girls?” he asked as he looked back up at Yunho.
Yunho thought for a while, the name sounded familiar but he couldn’t quite place his finger on where he had heard it before. “Isn’t that a strip club?”
“Sometimes, yeah,” Jaejoong replied, “but mostly it’s just a place for every black book criminal to have fun,” he pursed his lips and stirred his coffee some more. “I heard it’s really dangerous, but I’m quite sure JYP can be found there.”
“Are your sources are that reliable?”
Jaejoong’s eyes started to twinkle in playful delight as he looked up at Yunho. “I trust my sources more than anything in this world Yunho-ssi.”
Yunho could feel he was implying something, but couldn’t tell what it was. “Okay, so let’s presume JYP really is there-”
“He is.”
“... What is it you want to do with that information?”
“Isn’t that obvious?” Jaejoong asked, taking his straw out and placing it next to his cup. “He knows half of the victims, and most likely the murderer.”
“And you just want to go up there and ask him,” Yunho finished his thoughts, disbelieving.
“Something like that,” Jaejoong nodded as he finally took a sip of his coffee, the cream sticking to his upper lip. “But it’s too dangerous to go by myself... Now if only there was a strong cop to protect me,” he said and licked the cream away, his eyes still playful as he rested his chin on his hands to look at Yunho directly. “What do you say?”
Yunho could now tell what it felt like to have your brain leak out of your ears, and just blinked stupidly before he nodded.
“Good,” Jaejoong said and shoved the coffee in Yunho’s direction. “Here, you can have the rest.” Yunho blinked at the coffee, and back up at Jaejoong who was now standing. “I suggest we go as soon as possible. You think you can be ready, let’s say, tomorrow night?”
Yunho nodded, not even sure where he was anymore, images of Jaejoong licking his lips had taken away his capability to think.
Jaejoong snapped his fingers in front of Yunho’s face once and smiled as Yunho blinked confused. “Keep imagining things Yunho-ssi,” he finished, amused, before he waved him goodbye.
Yunho spend a full hour sitting there, trying to comprehend what had just happened.
