It felt like the diversity was just there to spice up th fic and make it more interesting, not to actually explore diversity.

I like to call that "obligatory diversity" and "gratuitous diversity". It's obligatory if the author clearly feels they must include it and make a big deal out of it (for whatever reason), and it's also gratuitous if the big-deal-making has no impact on the story whatsoever. Both are extremely common in published fiction these days.

Rowling is one of the very few people who managed to do it rather well--and that's because she doesn't make a big deal out of it, and neither do the characters, so it doesn't feel forced.

The story's gone. Too bad-this might have potential if it's actually written by a gay Muslim Egyptian woman.
The excerpt is just plain bland. It'd be fun to learn about Egyptian magic and history and such but this story doesn't look like it's taking advantage of the ethnic heritage it's using.
