there are two close grocery stores. one doesn't have much of anything, the other isn't too bad....the only problem with the second store is that i'd have to dodge insane drivers because there is only one way to reach it. =/ most sidewalks don't lead to anywhere worth walking too.
we actually started with walking. once it warmed up a bit we realized we should probably put the two hundred dollar mountain bikes to some good use!
hmmm ankle weights...that sounds good. do you know if those can hurt your knees (not that i have bad knees, but my husband does), because we do still walk sometimes.
I've been told ankle weights can do a number on your knees if you use them for walking or any type of cardio. Best to save them for the strength training. However, they do make a walking vest, which is supposedly much safer, though I have no idea how much it costs.
once a month!?! you're crazy! im a big cooker..so im always finding receipes and im like "OMG I NEED THIS INGREDIENT RIGHT NOW!" so even when i drove up there...it was still two/three times a week. i can't track money either way though :( haha
Trade the "ride your bike" for "take the bus" and you've got me for all 4 years of college, plus most of the first year after I graduated.
I didn't get my license until I was 22 so I was all about the walking/public transport. I've had it for 3 years now and I'm just now getting back in the habit of walking places that are close. I'm much happier!
i've been biking to the grocery store on my little pink beach cruiser for a little while, now. it even has a basket, so i just plunk my stuff (both chocolate-covered and non) into it. makes me feel good :)

I'm don't have a nifty bike but I've had the same experience walking to the grocery store.
Walking a mile to the grocery store really makes you critically think you purchases, even with a hand cart.
Strapping some ankle weights on help on the exercise front too.

ever tried walking a mile with tons of groceries when it's 115 out and the sun is glaring? oh, boy.

But since I bought the car, I think it's more convenient to shop once a month - in that case it's easier to track down the money.
