What if our grocery store is at least ten miles away and you have to drive through the ghetto to reach it. How does that fit into your little scheme, disfavored? :o

Yeah. It's nice when people assume "out in the country" means "easy to bike around". In my experience, it means the roads are less accessible, the distances are further, and the drivers less observant.
Plus, biking around break-neck curves, speed limit 60mph? No thank you.

yeah, our town is full of two lane roads with no shoulder and three foot ditches on both sides of the road. no place to ride a bike and we are 10 miles from "town"

I wish I could. My city is big on making downtown all pretty, but they haven't bothered to put sidewalks or bike paths on any public roadways, making it dangerous - you have to ride on the street with no paved shoulder and cars going by at 45 MPH! (Plus, I would never risk it now that I'd have to take my 1 year old along.)

I was really hoping in my new home (I'm moving next week) I'd be able to bike, but again - busy, hilly road into town, and a 1 year old.

Ah, well. At least I can garden in the new house, and that's exercise, too! :)

oh MAN! I'd SO much rather have my own garden then have to bike to a grocery store to buy my own groceries! we rent (a house at least)...and my landlord is overly psychotic about e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g!

Yeah, I figured it was worth the trade! Saving money on groceries this way will be much more fulfilling! (Apparently we have berry bushes, too, but I don't know what kind. And concord grapes...) We have been blessed.

I hope your landlord gets on some medication. :P

I've got friends in Chicago that started biking last year, and this past weekend they biked almost 40 miles (round-trip) to head to a museum. They're loving every minute of it, and it's infectious. They've almost got me convinced that it's time to go buy a bike for the first time in 15 years.

Yah! Do it! If you have any tech skills (or a library that has bike repair manuals), buy a used bike and save a wad of cash. The price of one tune-up will buy you all the tools you need. Craigslist is a good source for bike parts if you don't have a used-bike-parts shop around.

And mastering bike maintenance is one step down from getting a handle on car maintenance, which saves wads more cash. It's an unstoppable chain reaction. Pun haha.

i am really in favor of biking and DIY, but i have to say here that buying a decent (new) bike from an actual bike store was one of the best investments i've ever made. i had owned bikes before but never one that really fit me and my needs, and so i'd never felt comfortable or capable as a rider, and never used them much. it helped me so much to have suggestions about picking one out (i still got one of the lower-end models available at the shop) and now i love biking. so yeah, i bet you could learn these things yourself, but if you think you don't like biking, consider being fitted for a new bike and trying it out before you give up the idea.

I biked to my girlfriend's today, which is somewhere around 8 miles away. Considering my crappy car only gets around 20 mpg, this was cost effective.

I think I'll post a diy thing I just read about for bikes, which should save some people some money.

ONLY!?!?! i live in southern california (stupidly high gas prices for the US...they do good things to warrant it though) and drive an '04 hyundai sonata...and i get about 25 mpg. so 20 mpg doesn't seem that bad to me!! where do you live?

but yes! post away on the diy bike stuffs!

i just wanted to know where you live? the states? or do you live in a smart country where they have better cars (better on gas mileage, better for the planet etc).

oh wait, i just realized you said "miles" that probably means you're in the states, eh? since were the only jerks who dont use metric measures
