December talking meme: 12/12

Just as a storyteller? Yes. I love the way he thinks. I love the way he’s so engaged with stories that he can talk to us in tropes and conventions even as he’s playing those conventions against each other. I love how much he loves his characters. I have an immense amount of admiration for his ability to find and use talent. I love BtVS and ( Read more... )

I like your Whedon thoughts and agree with most of them, especially this one:

I’m old, I’m cranky, and the world is a terrible place. And yes, because Whedon consistently clears those aesthetic and philosophical bars and several higher ones on several fronts, I like him a lot.

HA. Same here. :)

Like, I know we all laugh at the YOU TRIED star but actually not a lot of people deserve the YOU TRIED star? But whatever else you can say about Whedon, I actually do usually think he merits a big, sincere YOU TRIED, and that is very rare and IMO means a lot.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is try. You try, you fuck up, you try to do better next time. He seems pretty open to that.

*claps wildly* It's hard online to find this level-headed response to Whedon and his oeuvre. Thank you.

Thanks! Conversations about Whedon do seem to escalate quickly, don't they.

My feelings about Joss are very changeable, because I think he is very changeable - he's brilliant in some ways, but falls short in others, so I don't think I could ever really say I love or hate him one way or another, but I will call him on the stuff he misses.

Fandom just seems very willing to set Whedon apart in some way or another on the "good at some things, not so good about other things, is not above criticism" front, but like...is that not how people feel about every artist they encounter and care enough to talk about? As much as I like and admire him, I'm not sure what makes him such a special snowflake that there's some question as to whether or not the fundamental stuff applies.

Here from the Sunnydale Herald.

I agree with most of this. I also had the experience of hearing Buffy hyped by everyone and then being surprised, in my case by how poorly it handled characters of color. AtS I had more warning that it had badness, so I was less surprised.

I was into superhero comics before I was into Buffy, so I appreciated the feminism in Buffy a lot, even though it isn't perfect by any means.

Yeah, I never got into superhero comics, even? I've only very recently started to watch a couple of the Marvel movies. So I didn't even have that context, which does seem to have made a difference to people.
