Taking a Break is one of the show's most disturbing episodes to me, not even just because of the mind manipulation (although: NIGHTMARES) but that Roslin does it just to get at him.
Ooooooooh yes great point. AND I LOVE IT.
That deliciously nasty letter she leaves when she thinks she's going to die is what tips him into handing the nuke over to Gina.
TROLOLOLOL THIS. And word, it's probably the single most terrible thing he willingly does.
Yeah. I end up a little baffled when Gaius is classified as a "villain" because he doesn't really do anything villainous until the end of S2. Selfish, sure, in covering his ass and going overboard with the MOMMYYYY LAURAAAAAAAA LOVE MEEEEEEE.
Every time Laura comes up against her moral or philosophical limits, every single time, Gaius Baltar is involved. He's either the one on the receiving end of her brutality or mercy, or he's the one who trolls her into doing right or wrong, and sometimes both. Taking a Break is one of the show's most disturbing episodes to me, not even just because of the mind manipulation (although: NIGHTMARES) but that Roslin does it just to get at him. It's sadism and it's unjustifiable risk and that's a line she's never crossed. But she goes through with it, because she is her absolute worst about him.
bless this entire post but especially this paragraph. so i'm going to spend the rest of my deay goign throughnicole_anell's tag for them aren't i? yes. yes i am. /regret nothing
AAAAH THIS POST. I wanted to quote the exact same bit penny_lane did. And I agree that it works on the other end too, I think for better and worse, she has more of an impact on his actions than anyone other than Six.
My god, "Taking a Break" is a difficult episode to watch and Laura's arc in it is *fantastic*. I wish I could think of a longer comment, but I guess I've said a lot about them already. :)
Your posts are great and they are both so great though! Looking back, I think that Gaius might be the character I was most consistently invested in, after Laura? Other characters I liked more or less as time went on, but I found Gaius so fabulously, lovably smarmy from the word go.

These two! Reading this almost (almost) makes we want to go find a fic where they have hatesex and generally spark and fail off each other although probably nothing could be as spectacular as what actually happened in canon. Like, for example,
Arming the traumatized genocidal robot, however, was unforgivably reckless.

right? like, he broke the world TWICE and still has the audacity to DEMAND A TRIAL. And Laura's "no I mean yes!" episode arc there is such a joy to see.

A worthy choice.
