So, women on Supernatural. TAMPONS, AMIRITE, LADIES? I'm not sure there's a whole lot I can add to the conversation about SPN and gender overall, though GOD KNOWS I am self-important enough to try. I'm so excited you love her too! And yeah. I'm not going to front like ~this is the most misunderstood feminist show EVAR or whatever. But I think this particular storyline deserves a lot of credit for the meta-critique it does with the WiR issue.

I'm all about portrayals of motherhood that extend at least a little bit beyond OH MY GODS I'M HAVING A BABY THEY ARE MY SOUL AND MY REASON FOR BREATHING AND LOOK MY BELLY IS GETTING HUGE BECAUSE THAT IS MY BABY WHO IS BY THE WAY MY HEART!

SERIOUSLY. like, that is certainly a valid reaction? but not if there is NO OTHER WAY TO ACKNOWLEDGE YOU FEEL EVER.

the idea of dubious consent being an intrinsic part of religious destiny really intrigues me, especially as it plays out on Supernatural.OMG YES. I feel like...this is one of those things where I don't feel like the show knows what it's doing. Like, I really doubt the show would intentionally go where it did with that throwaway line in MBV about Mary and John not liking each other and then never follow up with it? but....if the writer(s) ( ... )

She's so fantastic! Mary herself appears in what, four episodes? But there's such a compelling story there.

YES. I think the narrative is a lot less consistent about dealing with the MAN PAIN, but yeah, I loved that she got to explicitly say THAT WAS NOT WHAT SHE WANTED.

Seriously though, you got me thinking about this story and the show's handling of it in ways I probably wouldn't have thought of because it's usually best not to dwell on the show's treatment of female characters too much. Particularly, I hadn't even noticed how Mary's backstory fucks with the fridging. So, cheers for that.

pfft. This is very, very true. And - it was fine before, because I was warned, you know? I knew I wasn't grading on the Buffy curve or whatever. But the more I think about the stuff I do like, the more I start to wonder if it really does deserve such low standards, or if YOU NEED TO APPLY YOURSELF MORE, YOUNG MAN. But down the path of expectations lies only bourbon-flinging rage, so. BUT YES MARY IS GREAT.
