So I'm posting this early because (a) it's ready and I'm bored and (b) it's quite timely for this week's episode. I could wait until after, but it might get jossed and I really hate editing (LOL CAN YOU TELL BY MY SPELINGG?), so. happy early Galentine's Day, eowyn_315.

spoilery for all aired episodes of TVD )

feminism, tvd, reproductive justice, my f-list is the best list

Fffuuuuuuck this post. Is an excellent post and I can add nothing.

it further reinforces the doppelganger metaphor, the utter brutality with which some (arbitrarily judged to be worthy) young women’s bodies are objectified... but because of what they are. It’s a rare thing for a narrative to both have that be true and make it so clear.

Holy shit. Yes. Thanks for elucidating that.

I'm hoping so hard that coffin has the Original Petrova, because as great as I think it's been so far, there's still so much more mileage in this metaphor.

Still in the middle of S2, but this is so interesting!

the reasoning was the simple, cruel presumption that teenage girls can’t be trusted with shit.

Wow, yeah. I've been loving the Katherine flashbacks thus far, and I think you're absolutely right that this thread is among the more rare/potentially awesome -- what a cool show.

THE KAT FLASHBACKS. I DIE TIL I'M DEAD. This show knows its shit when it comes to genre themes.

There is absolutely nothing I can add to this. Nothing.

Except that you win ALL THE POINTS.

I read a post or two about last week's episode that saw Abby and went "meh" ... which now makes me want to flail all around the internets.

Dearey me I LOVE THIS SHOW.

what the fucking fuck? I can't help feeling like there's an element of fandom being determined to be dissatisfied about characters who are WOC.

People are just silly sometimes. Also, I think the person in question is jaded by television in general and found this plot to be ... Standard. Or predictable or something. Idk. I think as a plot on its own, there's a certain element of we've seen this before. But as you so eloquently point out here, even if the plot is "old" the reason why tVD is so effective and why I love it - is that the presentation and treatment of "standard" plots is new and interrogative. This series wouldn't work without an element of self-awareness.
