a lady who needs more screen time

I LOVE KENDRA. Kendra is important and she is awesome. I think my immediate reason for this answer was that Kendra is actually thinking with her head in Becoming - whether or not you agree with her that “Angel should be eliminated,” she is actually doing risk/reward calculations rather than ANGST ANGST ANGST YELLFEST.  I mean, I don’t know how it would have worked with more time for her, because for the beautifully emotional S2 drama to work there can’t be any outside perspective, and also she would have dusted soulless Angel before you could say Mr. Pointy, but I don’t care, she’s great.

Kendra’s perspective on the nature of Slayerness is just as interesting and revealing as Faith’s, even if it’s the polar opposite in most ways.  You can’t stop me, even if you kill me.  Buffy says “them” when she talks about other Slayers; Kendra says “me.” Kendra sees all Slayers as one girl, one girl in all the world who was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be; hers is the birthright and the power and the glory.  I love how unapologetically she revels in having been Chosen.  She’s been stunted and isolated and horribly exploited, and she reclaims the hell out of it.  I am Kendra, the Vampire Slayer.  That is WHO SHE IS, MOTHERFUCKERS, KtVS, HBIC.  Even for a Slayer she is a badass!  She got pissed and beat the ever-loving crap out of (or killed?) one of the Order of Tanaka with her bare hands for tearing her shirt.  The Order of Tanaka which, lest we forget, almost convinced the apocalypse-blasé Scoobies to get the hell out of Dodge. THIS IS A BITCH NOT TO BE FUCKED WITH.

ALSO SO LOVABLE RIGHT AWAY.  She geeks out about Slayerness with Giles!  She named her stake!  How do you not love a lady with one shirt and a quirky, ornate jewelry collection?  A Slayer needs no last name, but she does need hoop earrings!  Also, though she’s very serious about being a Slayer, she’s really very entertaining. “Do you think this is funny?”/*slam* ”I think it is funny now.” THE POWER OF PUNNING. When she shows up in Becoming and can’t help herself but jump out at Buffy, she’s having a little fun with the Calling, which is quite nice to see.  And no matter how new to the team she is, how dangerous her position, she’s secure enough to get in people’s faces.  I mean.  “No wonder you died.”  DAAAAAAAAAAAAMN.

Kendra had to show up when she did, and she had to go when she did. I just wish she could have stuck around in between.

btvs/ats, awesome ladies
