So through the endless series of links I have waded in these last couple of days,* I somehow came across this post by Clarisse Thorn:  “Why I Sympathize with Anti-Porn Feminists.”  And, lord help me, I dove on into this particular front in the endless straw battle of nudie flicks.

This post isn’t particularly incisive.  The author doesn’t share ( Read more... )

It's a rhetorical tactic. Clearly, anyone who is anti-porn is simply uncomfortable with their sexuality! *rolls eyes* I generally have a sex-positive view towards porn, but this article was garbage for the most part regardless of which side you're on.

She not only strawmans anti-porn, but also poorly represents sex-positive views of porn to boot. Most of us sex-positive feminists still consider the mainstream porn industry to be highly sexist and in need of reform.

SERIOUSLY, WHAT THE HELL?

I mean, in fairness, I don't actually know any sex-negative feminists, so much as feminists who disagree on the best way to make it possible for more people to have safe, consensual sex more often. But yeah, this is so NOT a legit exploration of the reasons people think porn is part of that.

No time to read the whole post now, but someday you need to come to Seattle so we can meet up and eat carbs and have SERIOUS FEMINIST DISCUSSION.

I WANT TO GO TO THERE.

I wouldn't blame you if you didn't want to read the post, TBH. It doesn't make sense w/o the original article, which as bluemage55 said, is a massive insult to pro-sex feminism.

I KNOW. I'm not anti-sex, pro-censorship, or even really anti-porn. I am anti-shaming, anti-"fuck y'all I got mine" politics, and pro-inductive logic. If that is the standard I apply to anti-feminists - who at least somewhat have the excuse of NOT HAVING AN ACTUAL ARGUMENT, MY GOD - why am I going to lower it for feminists, who do have reason and justice on our side?

I try. I really do. I read the pro-porn articles and blogs and talk to people I really respect about it. But when they play "well I love it SO THERE" as some kind of trump card over "you know a lot of porn fucks with a lot of people's heads, any chance folks could consider a way to recognize that without burning all the ladmags?" it's just draining.

Oh dear. I thought I had it all out of my system.
