Hurrah! I have my story written and ready to go. My beta is just grammar checking it for me, in one go, more or less - he has passed me chapter one back, so here we go.

brutti_ma_buoni and I had a discussion about a photo I had taken, and it set us both off on stories for this challenge. She has already posted her first chapter - mine, and the picture in ( Read more... )

Very much a tale of winter thoughts, melancholy and thinking of days gone by instead of happy anticipation.

It is not totally fluffy - but not too sad, honestly. I'll post a couple of chapters or more a day as S2C hands them back to me.

I like the suitable icon.

This has a lovely, elegiac tone, which fits the image of an open gate. (I keep remembering the end of Gladiator). Can Haldirin see something that others can't?

It's nice to see more of Haldirin, and I really enjoyed the 'images' of him watching the puppies, any playing with his ball, and drawing.

[I'm so glad, though, that the Valar made my Eowyn immortal. LOL.]

I'm glad you are enjoying this look at Haldirin - he is, really, the star of the story... just why he likes the Winter Garden will become clearer. I aim to post the whole thing over the next few days, here - but will have to wait for S2C to do the grammar check fist!

I think the important thing, in the mortality/immortality thing, is that they match - your immortal Éowyn is perfect for where she is and who she is wed to!

Hmm, I am indeed intrigued. Your Winter Garden is much more accepted as part of the scenery, but I sense there's still some mystery or magic to it.

This aging Eowyn amid ageless people (well, elves) is a little heartrending, though she seems to have some good supporters all around.

There is, indeed, some mystery or magic.

In both the Buffyverse and LotR there is the ongoing contrast between the mortal and immortal - one reason, for me, why they can be put together and the problems in both be familiar. So I wanted to show Éowyn ageing - and I realised that when Haldirin was the right age for the story to work, Éowyn would be peri-menopausal...

It was interesting to think back to her being pregnant in her early forties, too, and the sense of inferiority that the more perfect (as she would think) elven bodies would give her.
