Which areas of Japan are you planning on visiting? or are you still deciding? I'm actually moving to the northern Kanto area (about 2 hours north of Tokyo) on August 14. If you're going to be in the Tokyo area, I would recommend visiting the various animal cafes (owls, cats, they even opened up one for snakes recently). North from there in Miyagi prefecture, you might want to go visit the fox village. You can also feed deer as they bow to you if you head west into Nara (just south of Kyoto), and if you head further west to Hiroshima, there's also a rabbit island. If you have a chance to head to Hokkaido, I would definitely recommend it just because the weather over there is nice there now, and the food is amazing. I mean, the food is amazing on the main island too, but practically everything they use in Sapporo is fresh and made/raised on the farms there.
And of course, there's countless museums to go check out all over. You probably want to visit the Ghibli Museum, but I don't know if you can still get tickets now.
I'm going to be in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. If I wasn't going to be in California for a week, I would've had more time to explore other areas of Japan. I actually never heard of the animal cafes! I'll do some research on that.
If you don't mind me asking, what made you decide to move to Japan btw? :O
Tokyo things: Besides what I mentioned above, if you fancy art and history, check out the Hyakudan Kaidan Pavillion. The Meiji Shrine is also a great place to visit to witness some of the more historical parts of Tokyo. Unfortunately, I don't think the irises (which are in full bloom in June) will last by the time you get there in August. Eat like a ninja at Ninja Akasaka
( ... )
Definitely checking out the Meiji Shrine because my hotel is in the Asakusa area. I just did some research on Ninja Akasaka. Definitely will have to go out of my way to go there. It's got great reviews but also a bit pricey, so we'll see how much money I'll have to spend. Have you been there before?
As for Kyoto and Osaka, I'll try to check out as much as I can, but I'm primarily staying in Tokyo (5-6 days), while spending a total of 4 days in Kyoto and Osaka. Had I not set aside a week to visit California, I definitely would have been able to do more.
And yes, I'll definitely at least check out all the Pokemon Centers. I didn't even know Kyoto had one. Oops.
Congrats on the teaching job! Teaching abroad should be pretty rewarding, in more ways than one.
Congrats on the gets!! I am going to try to go to NYC on July 31st (I asked my parents if they could buy the tickets for my birthday) so I would love to meet up then if you're able to ^_^
And I am SOOO jealous you're going to Japan!!! I hope you have lots of fun :D
Hehe thanks so much. This is only my second time leaving the country, so I'm pretty excited. The only other time was waaaay back in 2002, so I guess I'm due.
And I will definitely do my best. I plan to squeeze in as many trips to different ones as I can while I'm there, in addition to doing touristy stuff, of course, but at the end of the day, whether or not I take pictures will depend on how much memory and battery my phone has. I may even bring my old iPhone to use as my camera for the trip...lol
Hi! I'm a local and down to hangout. Won't be able to this weekend since I'll be heading to Ohio for the National tournament but will be free when I come back!
