Even with the lowerdecks and office discreetly marked off limits, there's a lot of space on the pier, main deck, and quarterdeck to explore. (There's even plenty of room for dancing, and music does seem to be drifting in from somewhere!)

"So you have," she says, "I thought you might have had time to work out if I was wrong or not."

But she is preening, only a little, and lowers the glass.

"I hope you won't forget me when you win the case."

"I think that's really highly unlikely", he drawls.

"Really?" Melaka asks, one eyebrow raised.

She absorbs that in some silence, wiping up a biot of humous with a slice of pita.

"I was wondering," she continues, "whether you had any suggestions about London colleges. If you think it's worth my while trying to transfer?"

"I do think so", he says with a grin. "And I can get you prospectuses for all the good law schools, so you can judge for yourself."

"I'd love that," she says gratefully. "Where did you go?"

"King's College", he tells her proudly. "Very old, very well-renowned."

She'll have to take his word for that, as she's never heard of it.

"And is it hard to get into?"

"It has certain standards, yes. But I don't think you'll have much trouble."

Melaka beams, glancing shyly back down at her drink, just for a moment.

"You sound very confident."

It's not at all because he's trying to butter her up. Really.

"I am", he assures her.

With her hands full, Melaka has to toss her head lightly to flick hair out of her face.

"I wish I could share that confidence. It's a big step: I hardly know where to start."

"Well, that's where I can help", he suggests. "I mean, not that I've ever transferred, but it can't be that difficult to look up what paperwork you'll need."
