Various SL uniforms

New uniforms at SL, Stockholms public transport company. Still just trial versions, but they look rather nice, more classic than many other similar civil uniforms - tailored garments with metal buttons instead of poplin jackets and baseball caps, even if the cut is predictably modern and boring.

There's a wonderful collection of old buses and trams there, from late 19th century trams pulled by horses to more or less contemporary vehicles. Great place.

Didn't bring a camera, and the museum's photo database is closed at the moment. Will definitely bring a camera next time, though!

Looking at the uniforms and hair and moustaches, they totally remind me of Germans from the First World War. Do you know when this photo was taken? Sometime around 1900-1910? Or am I just filtering everything through my stereotyped perceptions as usual.

Should be something like that, yes. The photo wasn't dated, but around 1900 seems about right. Early bus and tram driver/conductor uniforms, they are quite similar to late 19th century Swedish military uniforms too. Have you seen this website? Swedish only, unfortunately, but years and basic terms like infantry/infanteriet, cavalry/kavalleriet and so on may be decipherable anyway, I think.

My impression of the Swedish military is, ever since Gustavus Adolphus they have always been very modern and in touch with developments abroad, even if mercifully spared the horror of most of Europe's wars. Much like Switzerland in this regard. I guess being cold, peripherally located, and home to Bofors helps ward off the aggressive feelings of foreign adventurers. The stuff on that page looks comparable to anything you'd find troops of the various great powers wearing at the time.

Have to say though, that M/1990 camouflage pattern is revolting.

Our governments have played all sides of every conflict in the vicinity for all it was worth to keep us out of them, basically. We have maintained some semblance of a working military force because of Russia/Soviet - not that anyone seriously thinks we could do more than maybe delay the inevitable for a day or so, but it is generally assumed that we wouldn't need to do much more than that either ( ... )
