DANIEL BRUHL SPECIAL: GOODBYE, LENIN!

Feb 11, 2010 20:46

D: Wolfgang Becker
Daniel Bruhl, Katrin Sass, Chulpan Khamatova.

It's 1990 and Alex's mother has just woken up from a coma. Alex decides to do whatever he can to prevent her from finding out her beloved nation doesn't exist anymore.

I really liked this movie. It's a ver sweet dramedy about a son who goes to extreme lengths to protect his mother. We usually watch movies that are the other way around, mothers protecting their young. I like the twist here. I think it's an original premise and I loved the story.

It has a very nostalgic feeling to it as well, and you can definitely relate to that. We all have things that we knew and loved that are no longer here (candy, shows, clothes), and you understand why Alex does what he does, and why people go along with him. You feel close to him as well because you do wonder if you would do something like that if it were your mother/father who was in such a fragile state. I wondered. If it meant the health of a loved one was in your hands, how far would you go?

So, Alex not only keeps his mother protected, he actually makes-up news (his friend Dennis is hilarious) and a world around his entire family so she can recover and be well enough for him to tell her the truth, slowly.

Again, it's a very sweet movie - I do like the term dramedy for it - that, from what I read, made Daniel Bruhl an actor to watch and turned him into the ideal son-in-law in Germany. I can completely understand why.

Overall: I recommend it.

Also, considering a)I'm great with faces and b)I haven't really watched German movies; I recognized two faces here from the other movies I've watched this week. The teacher is one of the monks from "Vaya con Dios", and the father is the man kidnapped in "The Edukators" :)
