REVIEW: TIN MAN

Jan 19, 2010 20:15

I finally have Internet in my own computer, so I can make icons and picspams again. I have a few things prepared and many others lined up, and I'll post them in the near future. In the meantime...

TIN MAN
D: Nick Willing
Zooey Deschanel, Alan Cumming, Neal McDonough, Kathleen Robertson

DG is a regular girl, who lives in a regular town. She wants more out of life and she soon finds it when she's thrown into a new world after a tornadoe hits her house.

"Tin Man" takes a turn at the old Wizard of Oz story, throwing the viewer into a story of betrayal and ambition, a quest for power. I was never a big fan of this story growing up but, considering I had given "Alice" a chance (and loved it so much), I decided to give this one a go too.

I don't want to compare it to "Alice" much, but I can't help it. Where "Alice" is fun, engaging and pretty to watch, "Tin Man" only pairs up in the latter. It's a very slow miniseries, it draaaags in some parts, but it is pretty to watch. The special effects and the make-up are fantastic, though I don't know if that would be enough to watch something. Oh, wait, Avatar... moving on.

I don't know why it didn't work. There are great actors here, who've shone in pretty much everything else they've done: Alan Cumming has always been a favorite and he's not bad here, Neal McDonough was superb in "Band of Brothers" and (spoiler alert) he does the best job getting shot near the butt. So I think my main problem is Zooey Deschanel.

I've never been a huge fan of her. I think she's lovely and I do like her style, but she always plays the same character. She's always the corky girl who's just so fascinating, the leading man falls for her in a beat. She's weird, but she's awesome. She's obviously not like that here, which would've been great! but I have problems with her characterization of DG. She's so... unaffected by everything. She's never surprised, she's never mad, she never smiles... she just stands there watching as life goes by and she follows people and she asks some questions and she sometimes frowns. I mean, she's thrown into a different world and her parents are missing, and she's not even freaked out!

As you can see, I didn't like this much. And everything went downhill when the characters kept calling Oz "The O.Z." I just kept waiting for Seth Cohen to appear. Maybe that would've been interesting enough to keep watching.

Overall: 1.5 points.
