What makes a song a good song?

Barry (surname Clubb, I think, or possibly Chubb) and Marguerite are organising some sort of songwriters' school in Christchurch for one weekend in August. They were among those who had lunch at Oamaru's Criterion Hotel on Monday, and they both seem quite keen that I should come up. I'm not convinced that my songwriting would benefit from such a ( Read more... )

If I remember the sign-up sheet I saw at Whitestone rightly, it's being held at Waipara.

You're probably right, the songs you do write are already good songs; I think the main thing is to make them from stuff the audience can relate to - which, for example, your latest one does; but you may pick up a few tips on the way as well - such as, perhaps, how to come up with more of them.

I'm not intending to go at this stage - Waipara's a long way to drive for a short weekend - but I might change my mind.

Aaargh!!! You answered!! Serves me right for leaving it more than 24 hours, I suppose. I won't edit it, I'll just add another instalment.

It's not that I don't think my songwriting needs improvement-I can certainly point to weaknesses in the Isaac song and the new one, as well as older songs. I am pretty satisfied with Mrs Edison. It's simply that I don't think anything a songwriting school might tell me will get me over my particular hurdles-like the sort of writer's block that leaves me with a song 11/12 finished for months, or even years. Knowing what makes a good song is one thing. Actually making one is another.

You can't still edit it after I answer? I thought you could. And you didn't say why you wanted me not to answer, and as you say, you wouldn't still be cooking tea at lunchtime the following day.

As far as I can tell this is more of a workshop than a school. I imagine rather than them telling you how to do it, you'll be sharing your own song-writing experiences, and someone else might have been in a similar situation and be able to help you out from there.

As Delia recently commented, and as I regularly come across at work, one should never assume that one can see something from all angles.
