A Dragons fell off horse!Sam last Wednesday and I've royally screwed up my back and hip.  Sixty billion x-rays and ultrasounds later, I'm told I have a grade 2 tear of the gluteus medius muscle near where it joins the ilium.  So basically I fell off my horse and ACTUALLY busted the right-hand top middle of my ass. Between the squished nerves and ( Read more... )

Ice! Numb the bastard and reduce the inflammation!

I iced for the first few days, but now I'm on to heat, which seems to aggravate the nerve pain less. Anti-inflammatories are my friend. They just seem to be taking a while to do their damn job this time. :(

Pain killers, ice/heat, rest. I busted my back (crushed 3 vertebrae) and pulled all the muscles and ligaments. Honestly? The muscle tears were the worst. Takes about a month for the pain to lessen - I'm sorry... muscle takes time to heal. Doctor wouldn't let me ride for 10 weeks - then said I could walk. Naturally, I rode my horse w/t/c in the spring after a 10 week layoff. He was 5... Second day he spooked and trampled me. Good news? I was fine except for a black eye. Funniest thing was, when they looked at the xray of my back, they asked me about the old crush fracture I had - apparently I'd already broken my back and hadn't even realized it... LOL!

Yeah, I'm benched for at least three weeks, they said. And then I'll be in Thailand for two weeks, so Sam pretty much gets five weeks off.

Back injuries are shit, seriously. I can deal with muscular pain and bone pain, that's all manageable and ignorable. But nerve pain is like walking around expecting a shark attack every second step, and getting the shark attack on all the alternate steps you weren't expecting it. No wonder all your muscles lock up. THEY'RE SCARED. And they should be. Holy mother of God.

Acupuncture appointment tonight at 5pm. I'll see if that makes a dent at all. Let's hope, eh?

Ice is good for the first three days, then heat. But the game with nerve pain is to distract the nerve from sending "pain" - you can do things like alternate heat and cold. Use Deep Heat and Ice Gel! Hope you're feeling much, much better soon.

I tried a little alternating between hot and cold last night, but I couldn't say it made any perceptible difference. Cold seems to be really aggravating the nerve pain, so I've switched to heat and that does seem to loosen everything up...

I'm going to the acupuncturist tonight at 5pm and I'm really hoping they have some miracle things to say. I may be dreaming, and I know my back can sometimes take weeks to calm down when it's been rattled, but I figure trying something new can't hurt.
