UK Article that has some great insight

Oh, God. This is like the best article ever. It was published in "The Guardian", which is from the UK. YES, an American did not write this. I think it's very very thoughtful and frightenly true. And I don't really consider this partisan. "The Guardian" is good for that.

I weep for the state of our education. I cannot believe that only 1 in 51 in 4 truly believe that dinosaurs and humans walked the Earth at the same time. Honestly, I did not realize I was a minority. WTH?

Thanks for the article link. I might be in shock...

Seriously, I'm right there with you in shock. You'd think common sense and common knowledge...isn't so common.

In the most powerful nation on earth, one adult in five believes the sun revolves round the earth; only 26% accept that evolution takes place by means of natural selection; two-thirds of young adults are unable to find Iraq on a map; two-thirds of US voters cannot name the three branches of government; the maths skills of 15-year-olds in the US are ranked 24th out of the 29 countries of the OECD.

...Pardon my vernacular, but what the shit? This is ridiculous. No child left behind, indeed. *fumes with the righteousness of a public-school goer*

Yeah it's pretty sad. But... did you ever see Jaywalking on the Jay Leno show where he asked random people on the street easy questions like how many branches of goverment there are and people don't even know?

It's scary like that, and not funny.

interesting article and oh so true. but there is one brighter light, which is that the conservative elite (Will and Buckley and crew) have to watch their party go into the hands of Hannity and Limbaugh. That's gotta hurt!

I don't feel at all bad for the repubs. They bring this malarky and dissension on by themselves. Let 'em off themselves I say. The important thing is to get our education back on track. Gees!

Wow, really? And all this time through high school I've been worrying because I feel stupid in comparison ...
Maybe it's just the area I live in. The Bay Area is so awkwardly sheltered from the rest of the world. :P

You know, I always felt like that it highschool. It's amazing how much more persecuted children are if they have a desire to learn. They are called 'nerds' 'dorks' 'teacher's pets' among other things, and that's pretty discouraging. When I have kids, I'm going to encourage their hunger for knowledge. *nods*

Hah, I was kind of the opposite. I tried to be a "nerd". Alas, I did not fit in because I wasn't smart enough. And because nerds don't like emotional people, apparently. >.< Ahh well, I've found my place now.
Yup yup, same here. :D I see nerdiness/geekiness/etc as a positive thing. I wanna grow up and have a nerdy little family. With a husband who works with computers. xD
