I agree with you about the boiler room backgrounds but for me the films biggest challenge was having other actors play Kirk, Spock, Scotty et al. If that hadn't worked it just wouldn't have been Star Trek. For me, they nailed it. They were all excellent with one exception. Zachery Quinto IS Spock but Mr Sulu didn't quite come off in my opinion.
